Pendletons were a big part of the lifestyle and still our today. I collect them and so do some of my friends. The really old ones from the forties and fifties are some of the nicest around

  3. ********, everybody looked like Fonzie and were covered with tattoos, ESPECIALLY the girls.

Ha ha ha ha. Seriously, I never knew what the name of those shirts were, but I had seen them in all the old pictures. I don't pay attention to fashon. All I wear is jeans or shorts and t shirts. Comfort is what's important to me.

Well said, maybe the dude is from Mars or something. My Dad was a Pachuco in the early 40s in East L.A. He p***ed on but it was always interesting to listen to him talk about those days. My mom was from the same neighborhood also. And let's not forget about the riots.

Interesting timing, I looked thru the Territory Ahead Catalog yesterday. They are selling a Pendleton in honor of the fifty year anniversary of the Beach Boys call surfer blue. Some great shots in the catalog. Mark

Pendletons are the finest shirts ever made.. well up there with the 40s gabardine shirts with the same 'board shirt' style.

I'll look around for pictures, I know Ive seen quite a few.

  7. actually went to detention for refusing to tuck in the tails of my "pendelton". I was told to "tuck em in" when I said f.u. to the school V.P. he drug me to the office by my collar .. was active in forming a pe***ion to have tails out .which was then allowed...... as close as i ever will be to a politcal extremist

1951 streamliner thanks a lot for the support. Would be great to have some other images.

the search is quite tough...found this one of a board shirt today...not rod and custom related but just plain cool and period correct;)

some stuff I found during the weekend, but hopefully someone out there has more shots worth sharing.

Not sure if the 1948-50 ones are Pendletones or just plain plaid shirts, but the '59 and '62 images are dead on.

Most of the new Pendeltons are sewn in Mexico now. They still process the wool here then send it to Mexico to be turned into shirts.

Dad's girlfriend bought him a new Pendelton every Christmas for a lot of years but he ruined most of them by not taking care of them.

Grew up in SoCal in the 50's. Uniform of the day was Levi 501's, Penny's white "T" shirt, Wing Tips or bucks and a Pendelton for colder weather or more formal occasions.

The Beach Boys and Suff Scene was all the rage in the early 60's. The Beach Boys original name was the "Pendletons". The Sufers wore them to keep warm on the beach at night. It can get very cold at night or early morning, even in California!

I can't figure that out either. Why would a gear head want a hot, itchy shirt that has to be dry cleaned? Could be why all the guys in the pictures are NOT the ones pretending to do the wrenching.

Well... You love them or hate them. The shirts look great and keep you warm. And when they got popular back in the day, there were not that many alternatives.

Pendletons were 'universal': The pachucos (late '50s-'70s) had them dry cleaned, wore them open, with the collar ****oned! (the shirt bloused out like a cape) ?
Always thought that looked like ****...especially the 'crow-like- walk they did to keep the shirt stiff.
    1957:
We wore them inside 501s or outside; depended. I had mine dry cleaned with Military pleats. I usually tucked them in, 'blousing' them in the center at the back.
Wool argyle socks and penny loafers...(this was Friday night after wrenching on the black '33 sedan all week...had to look sharp!)

All week long, it was the 501s outside the Engineer boots, white tee shirt with sleeves rolled up, maybe throw a Pendleton over and not ****on it...undo the sleeve cuffs, and iron them in half. The week-long 501s had the belt loops, for the 2" wide black leather belt & square buckle. Always wore the 'Hollywood' shades, too.

Sir Guy...Man, my bud had a Sir Guy shirt his Mom got him: it was black, with that collar that just had to be turned up. The cloth was 'chenille', (it was the stuff they made bedspreads out of, heavy percale, but with these little 3/8" balls in a 2" pattern...
He wouldn't wear it, (it wasn't cheap!)
He laid it on me, and my personal rule proved correct once again: 'If it looks terrible on the rack, it will look great on me'.
Between that and my RARE white pendleton (with light azure window pane stripe pattern) I had more chicks walk up and ask about "that COOL ****r you're wearing!"

I even wear my wife's late Grandpa's pendleton now, sometimes...but it doesn't really make the mark. (my F100's in primer) Kinda looks like a ****** in coveralls and backless spike heels!
So, Yeah. It is kind of a fashion show.

Am I the only one that recognized a young Clint in that pic.? Also , haven't heard anyone mention "rubber tire soled huaraches" in this stroll down memory lane.

Pendleton reissued the "Beach Boy's" pattern seven or eight years ago and I've worn mine to several BB concerts.

Uh Carl died in '98 - I think you meant Brian.
And you can add Bruce Johnston, he originally joined the band in 1965 and David Marks who was a member in 1962-62

I've had them, just too much of a pig to wear shirt that needs dry cleaned when I'm around cars. I still love my pearl snap vintage western shirts and would love to have a nice pendalton jacket. I still say the guys wearing them in the pictures sure aren't the guys getting close to grease.

Caught the Beach Boys 50th tour in Albuquerque in July and it was a hell of a show. Wore my Pendleton too! Brian Wilson, Mike Love, David Marks, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnson played for all most three hours. Great tribute to Carl and Dennis during the show.

  30. G'day, We visited Radiator Springs in California Adventure/Disneyland two weeks ago. We stopped in at Ramones "body shop" and saw a selection of Pendletons there. Thanks to this thread we now know why. We were wondering why a cold weather shirt would be sold at Disney. And yes, two of them followed me home to North Dakota.
