So I have ridden past this building that has two full walls proclaiming "starters and alternators" on it and finally stopped in today. I brought in the starter of of my 2300 series '49 Packard, the guy at the counter (mid 30's like me) takes one look at it and says "that's an OLD one" I tell him what it came off of and he tells me, "let me get my dad out of the back" So not 30 seconds later here comes who I guessed was his dad with a freakin' Packard starter! It was the other one that came on them that has a clutch lever thingy instead of a silonoid, but it looked 90% like mine and looked NEW. So we get talking and he tells me how HIS dad started the business in 1952 in of all places, an old Packard dealership and how the only cool Packard swag that they found was a can of Packard antifreeze that they gave to a lawyer friend (now a local judge) who owns a Packard and how to this day it sits on his desk. I left feeling that my starter has landed at the right place.

In the Denver CO area is Generator Exchange. 44th and Clay, 2650 West 44th Avenue Denver, CO 80211 (303) 433-1042 Good prices and good service. I brought a dead Ford alternator in to them. $55 later it was fixed(bad brushes). A rebuilt was $125. Still good 4 years later. Sign on building says "NO LUCAS" LOL. Nick
They're around, just gotta dig 'em out. I love it when I plop something on the counter and they KNOW what it is. Plus they have the sources for the odd parts that no one else could get if their life depended on it. Bob
Yeah he said he can get any part for it and reconmended that even tho the silonoid is still good that we should go ahead an put a new one on there while he was at it and to put the old good one in the trunk for a spair. I think he just didn't want to bolt that rusty old one on what will look like a new starter when he is done with it, but hey, you know that artists are a picky bunch!lol
Here's another in the Cleveland Ohio area. http://www.customelectricohio.com/ Great guys and I haven't been let down once. Walked in looking for a starter for 1955 331 industrial hemi - walked out with one in my hand.
I use D&D auto electric in denver. The guy is an older gentleman and he has some seriously fast turn around time and he is very reasonable. I have had quite a few generators rebuilt down there Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
I can definitely recommend a friend of mine back in Melbourne, Vic - Clem Mifsud who owns Pace Auto Electrics in Canterbury Rd, Blackburn (next to Middleborough Rd) - he has been rebuilding alternators, generators and starters motors himself (not just buy something in a box to on-sell) for 30 years. Good guy - honest, knowledgeable and fair. He's not a rodder, but knows his ****. Cheers.
Most independent shops that deal with the general public are that way. I had one old guy (gotta be dead by now...) that worked in a big garage behind his house. He was old school German, 110% fussy about anything he did. Bob
we had the Moultrie Alternator shop here for years and years, it was the kind of shop where he had all the old oddball stuff in stock, if he wasn't busy he would rebuild your stuff while you waited
Master Starter and Alternator here in Royce City Tx, Run by fellow HAMB'r and Hot rodder Dirty2. Not only does he know his ****, his prices are more than fair and the turn around time is quick. They still exist as long as we still support them!
Another good one is BILMAR its in the Cayce/West Columbia area of South Carolina, about 15 minutes from Columbia. Same day service, sometimes while you wait. Old school place thats been around for ever with great customer sevice.
