The birth of the muscle car.

  6. I have a hard time calling a ZL-1 '69 Camaro a "pony" car...

You can kind of tell the Johnny-come-latelys from the guys that have been doing it a while by how they refer to certain cars and people.

    Just an observation.

Pre '65 seems like a pretty good guideline to me.

But why isnt this Thread in the Questions & Suggestions Forum, and why is the Q & S Forum filled with Tech Questions?

Why is this Thread so long?

There is a place for everything ....
    And everything in its place.

This is a GREAT place for TRADITIONAL rods. As I build my rod I have and will seek enlightenment and direction here.
I have a great place I visit for my El Camino. They help me a lot with shit I don't know about Elkies.
When I buy an Olds 442 (that IS the way its done!) I will go among the heathens and learn from them too.

It is REALLY cool having this community. What is even better is that you guys are willing to share and to steer us newbies on the way things SHOULD be.

Cutoff date? Who cares! The WISDOM and the ATTITUDE here are what count.

i think it depends on your defenition of a muscle car. does a uni-body make it? a big motor in a midsize car? what? cause it seems to me plenty of u bods are getting the early sixties metalflake treatment and are real well accepted in the trad scene and what about the rocket 88 or even the hudson 308 six? those are cars that no one would look twice at with a primer job and red steelies, even though they were "factory rods".

as was said previously, we are all in it together (that is, those of us who actually get our hands dirty) and the point is, old cars looking good and done up to go fast are the bulls teats. to me, era doesn't matter. shit, i even dig vws.

    just not on THIS board...

ive always believed the first real muscle cars were built in the mid 50's. thats is if you define a muscle car as being a typical sedan with minimal dressing, but with a real importance on performance and not so much luxury or comforts. lots of cars fall under that category. the 57 dodge d-500 is an example, the golden commando plymouths of the late 50's too. there were a bunch of mercurys and some fords built with those intents too. you know what im talking about... sleepers. you couldnt tell wether it had a six or some sort of multi-carbed, nicely cammed v-8.

when it was said earlier that the gto was just marketed better is true. plymouth made the max wedge savoys in 64 and they were real ass-kickers too. and unlike the gto, they didnt get a lot of chrome, a radio, power steering and a whole bunch of other hooie-balooie. you got your dad's car with an engine and tranny that loved eating bias ply tires.

with that being said, do we need to push the limit back to 51? i wouldnt think so. just because they were so many crossover years were hot rodding was just as popular as musclecars. but theres no doubt that everything changed in 65, 66, 67 and on.

just my two cents, but maybe i dont know what a true musclcar is.

    Yeah, I do.

    This is stupid, y'all.

It's like the Ford vs. Chevy, Mustang vs. Camaro, etc. We are all CAR GUYS AND GALS! Why bicker?

I come to the Hamb to talk about and see traditional hot rods, and nothing more.

My stepdad had GTO's. I learned to drive in a 66 GTO convertible with a tri-power and four speed. We used to cruise Riverside in Spokane, WA with the Dukes every weekend. We were in the club, but many didn't like our Goats being in it...however, I got to ride in Cecil's T-bucket and check out Speedy's Woodie (that sounds bad) and therefore I became a hot rod junkie too.

Now, I drive to work everyday in a turbo Subaru that runs low 14's from the factory. Does that mean I still don't dream of building a 32 with a Flathead? No, not at all.

Anyway, I love GTO's and musclecars in general, my Chevy pickup, black Trans Ams, rally racing Subarus and STi's, but when I want to dream about my "T-bucket to be" or the 32 I want to build when the kids are older, I come to the Hamb...nuff said.

my two cents. i didn't read most of the previous posts so i dont know if this was mentioned or not, but have you ever tried to chop a 64+ car most of them are ugly. there are some nice ones though.

I take this to refer to the cut-off year at an event. Now if someone has an event and they set the cut off year at 1948, and 10000 cars register, and the place they have it can just bearly hold 10,000 cars, then I think they are doing the right thing. If the place can hold 2000 cars and they set the cut off at 1975, and 5000 cars show up, then they screwed up, and everyone goes home mad. What I don't get is when there is an event that is for 1965 and up, they are lucky to get 500 cars. Read the rules before you leave home, and if they tell ya to park in the specator lot, you know why.:(

wasn't the big change with mopars subframes? if i remember correctly, that happened in the late 50's / early 60's. massively wide bodies happened in 1970, with the e-body. yuck. if you HAVE to talk mopar muscle, anything from 62 - 69 will suffice. or 62-72 a body.. other than that either it's too slick or too ugly ;-)
