i have.a 3 blade stock fan on my stock 50 ford/flathead. got stuck in a traffic jam today when it was about 85 air temp, the old girl got up to about 210,,,,,,i don't like that at all. the stock fan has the fan rivited ? to the snout that comes off the pulley. the fan/snout make up about 3" if i could cut the snout back to the pulley i'd have room for a big elect. fan. the car is all 12v so that's no problem. my question can i cut the snout/fan off and will the pulley stay on ? thanks

I have an 8BA in my '36 pickup. I found a 6 bladed Ford fan that is about 19 inches in diameter and mounted that puppy. That thing is great and now with 180 degree thermostats, I show that or less on my temp gauge.

    36tbird,
Do you have more info for that 19" fan you use? What vehicle it's off of? Anything special you did for mounting it?

I think I'd flush the radiator and block and maybe look into some new pumps. The fan was designed to keep it cool. I think you've got room to run both and use the electric as needed.

I agree with the suggestion of checking your whole cooling system before cutting anything up. You may find that with some Maintanence on the pumps, thermostats, radiator, hoses, etc, your problem may go away...

Note: I don't anything about your Maintanence habits...maybe you've already done all those things and your cooling system is up to snuff, if so, you. Might want to check a little further with the engine tune up....

Your car should run cool enough in stock form with everything working properly.

By the way...is your fan mount bolted to the front of the intake??

    Good luck.

I've got a 6 blade on my Merc and it cools fine till it gets up to about 100 outside. Then it's time to drive one with air.

just grind the rivet heads off, punch out the rivet body and bolt on a bigger mechanical fan. This is an after market and can be picked up for peanuts at flea markets. Please don't mess up a flathead with an electric fan. Try to be as smart as the old fellas that had no access to electric fans. They have become a quick and dirty cop out. JMHO.

Dr., Joee and Texas Web, I will try to take a picture later and post it. But, it is a stock set up just like the one in tommy's picture. The only difference is the fan hub which is the type that bolts together and has the oil filled bearing. I think it was they type used on '46-'48 trucks. Here's one on 'bay illustrating the fan hub but it is only a 4 blade, www.ebay.com/itm/vintage-Ford-flath...Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f1b9b2757&vxp=mtr. You may have to be patient, but the 6 bladed ones come up once in a while. That is where I found mine.

That's the source for big original type fans...heavy truck fans are out there for all versions of flathead.

Here's a couple of pics of the fan ***y on my '36, pretty much the same as those others have posted. The blades are aluminum on mine but much thicker than newer flex fans.

Spitfire.... that's pretty cool. I may be borrowing this idea, with a disclaimer painted on my fan that it was your idea.

well i reset the points/timing. checked the hoses, water and flow of water. all ok. it's 82 here took her out for a drive...runs 190 going along at 30-50mph, short traffic jam 3-4 minutes went to 210......checked the water temp with mech. gauge read the same. checked with laser gun, heads were 205 as was the radiator. someting off some place if i'm running down the interstate 60mph it should run 170 or so not 190,,,this makes me think that it needs more(bigger) radiator......getting hot in slow traffic makes me think it needs more fan. here's pics of my fan and snout that i want to cut off and replace with an electric.....anyone have any ideas.....??????thanks

I agree, they had 85 Degree temperatures back in 1950 too. Possible sediment and or rust in some of the p***ages in the block. Flush the hell out of it, I mean a real deal one, car running, garden hose about half on stuck it the top of the radiator, heat wide open on high and hot, pet**** totally open or is possible remove the whole pet**** ***embly so you can really get some water flowing, and go have a beer, or three, just let it run.

If you are gona cut it off I would take off the blades only, use tin snips or a grinding wheel and then you good but I still think that the car should stay cool "as designed" I would try the super flush first, also you do have coolant/antifreeze mixed in your water right?
