A three hour boner!! Quick, someone call Volvobrynk a doctor! Or maybe a hooker. Three hour boner. I can only faintly remember the last time I had one. Or maybe I only remember getting one before I fainted. St. Eligius--help me!

Hey, Ryan knows what he's talking about. I tried hammering my mock up and all I got was a bunch of wrinkles where the curve reversed. Finally, after pecking around for an hour, I came up with a sort of compromise. I didn't try to work it real smooth. It's a little hard to see but the "tail" section dips down then flares back up. See what you think.

yonahrr..... That book is fantastic !!! Of course, so was the whole adventure....The actual car is on display in the National Auto Museum (formerly Harrah's Collection) in Reno Nv. There is another book called "Against All Odds", which I read this summer. In the early 50's, Life Magazine did a feature article about the race , the cars, and the brave men who did it.

Hey, thanks for the nice review of KING OF ALL MEN, 4TTRUK. I had a fun time writing that book. Too bad I could never get any mainstream publishers interested in it. They wanted me to make Schuster into a vampire.

Well, now that I had some idea of what I was going to do via my mockup I got to work bending up some 1/4 rod for the edge then rolling the lip, pounding the fender and rolling it smooth. I lengthened the upturn at the back and left it flat. That will save me a lot of work and it still looks pretty good. I also kept the hammer away for the curve betwixt crown and flat. (I've been waiting this whole time to use that word betwixt.) See what you think.

    Pounding headache

I got all the beating and wheeling out of the way yesterday but I forgot my camera. So now I have four fairly smooth fenders that need a little touch up and I started thinking about fender supports. I was planning to use the original supports so I dug out the old fenders and deriveted a couple supports off. After half a day of piddling with them I determined it would be way easier and look much better if I just made new supports out of some 5/8 round stock.

Looking real good! Have you decided what color you plan on using? Body color, or contrast?

    New fender irons

I scrounged around the shop and found some 3/8 X 1.5 bar and some 5/8 rod to make some new fender irons out of. After I made one, I bolted it to the bench and got ready to heat and bend it. Then I discovered I was out of acetylene! I was so mad I decided to take the whole speedster apart! Not really. I had to take the body off, to get off the frame covers off, to adjust the threaded couplers I put under the frame covers. Sounds complicated but I'll show you after I get the frame covers off. The only place to buy acetylene is about 30 miles away so I'm off tomorrow morning. With the frame covers off I can also tidy up the running board hangers and build the running boards. See how neatly everything works out.
How about a box-like running board with a toolkit inside. Or maybe a few firearms. Or...

What goes between the fenders & body so you don't get splashed in damp weather?

Ah the Great Leslie. What a great reference. I have been following this thread forever but that made me post. BTW I loved "The King of All Men" and purchased "Alternating Currents" but haven't gotten to it yet. Keep up the great work.

    WOW!

WOW! Have you bought any acetylene lately? $80 for a tank full. I think I'm switching to propane. How hard is that? New torch? New tip? Regulator adapter?

After I got back from Gainesville with my oh so expensive acetylene I grabbed the first visitor to my shop and wrestled the body off. I only had time to heat and bend one angle on the fender support I made up. I have to figure out how I'm going to fasten the fender to the support before I can make the angles. This requires concentration. Also I have to figure out how I'm going to make up braces under the fender to hold the fender supports. Confusing isn't it? And how to hold the braces to the fenders. Carriage bolts? Big wide rivets? Tune in for the next episode. More concentration.

    Jerry,
I think the acetylene regulator fits the old style propane (left hand internal) fitting. From what I have been told, there is no modification but to attach the regulator to a propane tank. It's supposed to work for cutting, bending, and brazing, but not welding. I plan on doing some cutting this weekend, I have a BBQ tank I plan on trying, I'll let you know how well it works.

    [IMG]Jerry,

Step bolts would look good to fasten the fenders to the braces. They are like carriage bolts but the head is much larger in diameter.
