So I have this new unibody project, and I had a pretty good idea on which way I wanted to go with the build, but Ive decided to drive it in a nice even coat of red primer (its being painted right now) for awhile before I make a final decision. Get a feel for what the truck wants to be ... if that makes sense? For now I'm going to get rid of these rollers and run steel wheels with poverty caps. Im leaning towards 57 Ford poverty caps. But I have no idea how they clip on. Do they work with wheels that have the outside nubs, or the inner nubs? Does any company reproduce these? Will the work on 15 inch wheels? Mark
I guess we'll just call them "hubcaps" like they were called originally and "wheelcovers" for the full cap. Would that satisfy everyone?
Call 'em what you want, steelies and caps are the only way to go... the sooner you get rid of those ****py aluminum wheels, the sooner you'll have cool *** looking ride. Thumbs up!
Didn't mean any offense on calling em poverty ... Ive always heard the smaller caps called that, or dog dish caps. I figured it was a way to distinguish what I was looking for from full size hub caps. I am curious what a Y.T. is though. Wondering if I was just insulted lol.
Hey Dude, "Dog Dish" is cool or just plain ole "Hubcap". "Poverty Caps" is like someone s****ing their nails against a chalk board. As far as Y.T, well most Y.T's use the term "Poverty Caps" which is the 20 to 30 something crowd so Y.T is how I refer to that crowd which is Young Turds. Anyone over 60 is a Old Fart and for someone like me who is 49, a Mid-age Farturd. I am not serious though, just stirring the pot.. Peace.
Hmmm, I'm just shy of 53, at least I'm not an old fart yet, although my four grand kids may disagree LOL. Poverty cap may be a regional saying here ... anyway I think we all get the gist.
What's with the 3 X boxes??? Learn how to use the manage attachment feature when posting pictures! Damn rookies..
Can someone tell me, in a coherent and intelligent way, why one kind of 'small' hub cap is preferred over another? I know, Early Ford guys generally like those of the late forties, whereas Chevy guys like the Police Style, used on rally wheels. Is there an esthetic that I'm missing? Why not use the Original Equipment Manufacturer style that came on the vehicle in the Year Of Manufacture? I am aware stainless is preferred to aluminum, or painted. And, that 'Baby Moons' are in and out of favor, depending on any number of reasons. So what's the bugaboo about using stock style hubcaps? To me, using late fifties hub caps on a sixties vehicle is 'retro'. (My question is, of course, somewhat tongue in cheek --- but I'm curious what your responses will be.)
I just call them "small hubcaps". Seems like some may have called them "beanies" (like the hat) way back when. (Showing my age here.) The 57 style Ford caps should fit either a 14 or 15 inch wheel, if they have the outside nubs. I guess some folks called them "poverty caps" because they probably thought the guy who bought the car was too poor to afford the full wheel covers, which cost a little bit more.
Just personal preference is my guess. I'm also into the 67-72 Chevy trucks. On my last two 4x4's I used the steel OEM white wheel with the stock "small caps" Right now I'm putting together a 69 Chev panel. Its shiny black. I tried different combos of wheels and caps for it and ended up with black steel wheels with baby moons. As far as 57 Ford caps for my 62 unibody, Ive just always liked that particular Ford cap. I'm always open to other ideas. I just don't know that much about other Ford caps.
Cop car caps, poverty caps, dog dish caps, small caps, or what not, when the hell did we become so ******** politically correct on the HAMB that a guy gets ragged on for calling what were the no extra cost when new hubcaps poverty caps? I did have a dog once that thought a 3/4 ton small hubcap was a great dog dish that she could through in the air and bang to let me know it was dinner time. I rather like the style of cap you showed in the photo CG if you can come up with four good ones. Back in December 68 when I bought my 69 Olds Cutl*** that I had special ordered while in Viet Nam I got it with the little caps and went down to the tire store the next day and had chrome reverse rims put on it with the small caps snapped on and it made for a great look.
Am I missing something...poverty caps...did Paul (POVERTY FLATS) sell hub caps before he got into vintage engines? Just wondering.
I did some searching and discovered a whole bunch of really neat small caps from Ford ... Now its going to be hard to make a decision lol. Im ***uming these caps all snap around the nubs and dont have an inner ring that goes on the inside of nubs ... going to have to make some phone calls. I hope the people that have these caps in their catalogs know how they work.
Man I feel the love on this thread .... must be the alighnment of the moon and stars ...... either way, poverty or dog dish or ******s or whatever you put on that pickup is going to be a hella improvement over that **** that is on there now ! LOL .... good luck and do what feels good!
Who gives a **** what you call them. I call 'em 10" caps because that's what size they are. All the major companies made them. I have some of the 56-57 style on my F1. The outside nub style wheels are from 1965 into the mid 90's.
