I went to Art Riportis shop awhile back and was amazed to hear the same thing, he said that Joe was actually a kick*** metalworker and was capable of top notch stuff, but just kinda half***ed stuff for fun.

The story (as I know it) was he was toolin around racin with the Jersey Torch, went to shoot flames and had a recently installed GM tilt column. Well, when he turned the key off to shoot, the column locked and sent the car off the road. It was the most mild of the chopped Mercs he had, the Maroon one with the simple pan frontend. Its in the thread above I started, at least Im pretty sure.

There is another thread about him that a guy in Sweden started, I think the post accident shots are there, if not I have em. Wild, the car was wasted.

That's the story I heard, Chris. Apparently he drove up the guide wire of a telephone pole which flipped the car over. I also heard that the battery shorted (due to the rollover) and set the car on fire.

The first lime merc was owned by Joel Sheipe who has it to this day. It has my favorite roof ever. The unchopped green one was built in the early 80s by Harvey Bagshaw for Pete Coleman who is a custom king on Long Island.The red 51 4 door was built by Ted Malmgeen and son. When they chopped it ,the roof was in 1000 peices.The burgundy 51 with the fadeaways was biult by Bill Abate who brought the Dagostino Lincoln to Jersey.
In the second batch we have the red somewhat Barris style 50 Merc that actually came from Michigan before Long Island.THe squashed 50 convert came was built by Bob Nitti from Jersey City N.J. who later restored the Aztec.The black chopped mec under it is owned by Joe Genitempo of Cedar Grove N.J. and was chopped by Bill Abate. The *** shot of the candy red convert was of a car that was built by Larry Kramer for Butch Akers of uostate N.Y.

The Dragon Lady Merc also belonged to Ed and Lynn McLean from Cobourg Ontario in around 1990/1991 when they brought it to my wedding. They sold the car to someone in Florida, ***umably to Ron Gentry? Built many a fine custom Merc and various others since.

Dragon Lady was owned by Ron Gentry down in Deland Florida back about 15 years ago, I haven't seen it in a while. Car's a tad bit over the top.
