Customs Legit low milage 40 Merc barn find!!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by blmoore, Aug 27, 2012.

  1. The reason the guy said "no" to $10K was he wasn't interested in selling, period. I'd bet he knows there is no way in hell it's worth $5K, much less $10K, the way it sits. He probably had a blast watching you squirm, then say "well, I'm gonna hang onto it!" and the look of disappointment on your face, as the car continues to decay on that dirt floor. There are people like that, ya know.

Some people hold on to the cars just to have people to talk to. A guy at church his dad has a 34 five window that has a 331 in it and a 55 nomad. He will not let either go. He told his son he will never sell them because he likes all the people that stop by and ask and want to talk. It's sad but some people are like that.

the goal is just keep in touch with him, stop by and talk to him, let him know if he ever wants to sell to give you a call. i picked up my 51 merc from the ol timer around the corner from me that has owned it since 53. i caught him outside one day and he said he would probably sell but just wasn't ready. took two more years and a few stop bys and some runins, but then he stopped by one day out of the blue and said, if you want my merc for the price you offered me its yours!

  7. I found this Merc in a junk yard a few weeks back. It's in Southern Idaho and I figured if I could get it for the right price I'd do it. VERY strait, nice dry rot free car, no engine or transmission. Talked to the yard owner and they said 30,000.00 would buy it! Man, some people live in another world!

This problem existed long before Barrett Jackson. I'm the guy in the family that actually gets cars built and back on the road, but relatives from both sides of the family have stuff rotting in old sheds that I can't get my hands on (a 32 model B is one and no, I'm not kidding or mistaken). Some people just have this extreme emotional attachment to cars, bikes, antiques - take your pick - and the stuff isn't moving until the day of the estate sale, regardless of whatever auction is on TV.

Hang in there. he might not sell it today but there is always another day. Offer to pull it out clean it up get it running, then he knows your intentions are good and not trying to get it from him and sell it for 5 times the price making him look like a fool. Stay in touch and I bet you get a call on it. Good luck!

There was a 65 Impala here that had BURNED!! The guy wanted $5K.
I actually laughed and told him to forget Barret Jackson. He still has it.
That was 2 years ago. Not worth $100.00 now. Heck, 25.

There's a joke I heard that refers to an Iowa farmer that comes up to Minnesota to fish.
With him he brings a $20.00 bill and one pair of underwear.
He doesn't change either all week.

Sounds like it might be that guy.

  14. Sounds like he was hoping you were an idiot. He must watch the B-J auctions.

Sorry to hear you didn't get it!. I had a friend who had over 22 cars, everything from a 55 F100 , a model A coupe, a Vega with a V8 , a 66 Charger , a 57 210 Chevy , and a lot more, all way cool, all needed repair/restored, none ran but all complete great cars. He refused to sell anything even when the bank foreclosed on his house and he had to move everything, he wouldn't sell any. He found out he had brain cancer and died this past May. All of his cars were auctioned off cheap by his brother to pay storage and medical bills. So what good did it do him to hang on to em' for so long?? We don't ever OWN anything we just HAVE it while we are HERE and then it goes to the next person. Some day some body else WILL get that car! sorry it wasn't you.
Don't give up keep a watch on it and it may happen some day. Mel:D

There's an old Scottish saying," What's for ye will no go by ye". I personally hope that this one does not 'go by' you. Seeing as how I can't have it; and I really want it bad, I think you must be next in line!
Like everyone says, go visit the guy occasionally and show some interest in his life, just don't let on about hotrods!
    Best of luck, Davo.

  20. Alot of advice here about keeping in touch and how to talk to him and so on and so on. Fact is, it's time to move on, the time you spend lamenting about this car would be better spent in search of a car that can be bought. Let it go as if it never existed.
