  3. The room is nice in pedal and steering area through the firewall inside the frame on a "no pinch"

I pinched mine and it made a lot of work - If you can get it to look good without I would.

I'll be honest, when I read some of the posters on here, I keep trying to answer a simple question maybe someone can answer: exactly when did traditional begin? Can it be pinned down to a certainty. Because, some make it sound like a latter day Moses brought down the laws off the mountain, if you accept their opinions at face value. Which, of course, I have trouble with. And, who is the keeper of these laws, today; because we need to make copies and circulate them, if they indeed exist, so those who color outside the lines can be put in stocks, or given a good ass whoopin'. Otherwise, anarchy will ensue and builders will spend good time and money building stuff they like, and it won't conform to the letter of the law, or be the kind of traditional others consider hard rock fundamental 'like they did it back in the twenties, thirties, forties, fifties traditional'. And, I am serious. Have a convention, go through this stuff, line by line, piece by piece, and make a rule book. If it's not kosher as per the book, then they aren't traditional. If so, give them a plaque or sticker to put on their dash or firewall. I don't exactly know what rules TRODA had, but they were on the right track. Then we can discuss things like men doing their best to play by the rules and have fewer of those who tote the torch carrying around their anger at the world, and at periods of time when things happened they seem to think were not traditional. Thus a cut off point for it. Too unrealistic? Probably. I'm simply pointing out how I feel when I read people being snobs, who know better because they have tig and mig welding on their traditional thirties and forties rods. Know what I mean? It cuts both ways. I'd say if it's going to be traditional certain tools and methods can't be used as well. I want that to be in the rule book, too. And, no reproduction parts, no aftermarket wheels. I know it gets dicey. This is why I get frustrated reading the stuff written by otherwise intelligent people talking like they were crypto-fascist techo-geeks, and putting down folks in decades past who were simply building rods. It should be easier. Just refer to page such and such and subsection so and so. And, their transgression would be like a crimson 'A'.

  5. The only thing certain is uncertainty,,trying to pin down just exactly when anything become a tradition is speculation at best.

We all have a vague idea and all I gave to go on is my faded memory as to when I first started noticing the frames being pinched,,my thoughts are guys like Dick "Magoo" Megugorac and Lil' John Buttera were two guys that brought it to the forefront, like it or not both these guys help pave the way to some beautiful 28/29 hiboys in there day! fortynut, I read your post twice and all I have to say is...what?

I agree with the no pinch line of thinking, as for 28's looking better than 32's, well that's a personal taste thing:)

I find it hard to believe that major surgery was done back in the day to a 32 frame, for the sole reason of "looking better". My guess is that it is more of a street rod thing. There were probably exceptions, but I bet they are very rare. Cut the rear of the body to fit on the frame, make some wood spacer strips and bolt it on, then off to the races.

I think 32's are cool, but they look a little chubby compared to the "A"s! The extra room in a 32 is nice though.

DSC00822.JPG I actually swell them out a little in the body area and pinch a little in front so the frame follows the body, I am able to get all 4 cowl bolts into the frame. I'm welding this one as we speak, it is a Tudor so I didn't have to mess with the rear pinch. You can see it isn't much of a pinch and plenty of pedal room.
Now, I just gotta find that guy that gave me the plans sideways and have a word with him!

  10. The rails from JW rod garage (formerly Jim Wimer Rod Garage ) are really nice. They hace a swept C notch in the rear and are stamped so tge reveal and the outer edges have a nice curve to them.

  11. JW is also who sc-cal is using for their 32 frames now
