I am in the mad search for a 1948-1953 & 54 Chevy truck, I’ve looked at a few and found a couple sweet deals out there but I am a bit torn on the bed length, short vs long, 3100 vs 3200 vs 3600 So how about everyone helping me out and post some photos of your favorite GM 48-53 & 54 trucks. <o></o><o> </o> I’ll start with one I just found for $1,000.00 it’s straight, loaded with patina but it’s a long bed.. <o></o>
here is one i see from time to time at my local home depot store, the cool thing about it is it is still being used as a work truck!
Search here and you'll find more than one thread dedicated to these trucks with hundreds of pictures.
Jim Beam + $1200 + eBay = My Truck. Starts and runs without hesitation. Still doesn't stop, but I'm working on that.
I like the long beds, but am also weird like that! Since you mentioned it, what are your plans for the truck? How are you going to use it?
I do like the short beds better, i'm not going to be haul lumber or anyhting like that, just looking to build a nice shop truck and use for hauling parts to the swap meet.. as far as my post, i'm hoping for some eye candy to get me through this work day as it will be pretty slow today..
Then go here. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116075 Thats the big thread that has already been mentioned above. Its more than enough to get you through the day.
there are two nice projects it the yard next to my shop that i am just waiting for the owner to let me drag them over to my side of the fence...
This is one I built about 5-6 years ago, I just let it go this last January. Its was a lot of fun. 1953 5-window short box.
When I started on my truck, I got it for free. A guy called me up and asked if I was interested in an old truck that was sitting in his driveway that he wanted gone. 2 hours later I had it home. Seven years later it looks like this.
Which truck you get depends on what you want to do to it. Drive stock or replace drivetrain. '50 and older had Huck style drum brakes. Not self adjusting & parts cost more. '51 and newer had Bendix (normal drum). '49 & older had knee action shocks. 1/2 tons had 4.10 gears & torque tube driveshaft. 3/4 ton had 1/2 torque and 1/2 open, but 5 something gears. One ton had open driveshaft & 6 something gears? 3/4 & one had heavier frames. My '49 w/4.10 & 31" rear tires does 60 @ 2100rpm. That is rather noisy w/ 235 & SM420. Can't even hear my phone ring, much less talk on it.
if you like long beds my brother in law had a 1950 Chevy pickup with 1 ton with a 10 foot bed My 1954 GMC long bed chassis with a short bed utility box .so I extended cab 10 1/2 inches
Sorry forgot to post my pic. Lol Her is one that was given to my fiancé and I by a good friend of ours.
