Model A cowl body mounts - 28-29 different from 30-31?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rustynewyorker, Jul 20, 2012.

  1. Just what are the differences as far as body mount tabs/holes on a 28-29 Model A frame versus a 30-31? Thanks.

No difference at all. All Model A bodies/frames use the exact same mount points and tabs.

I've found no difference between years and in fact it's pretty hard to tell what year a frame is without anything else attached. I have found that holes for body mounting etc., can be different on the same year cars. My understanding is parts were supplied by several vendors who had slightly differences of opinion of were things should go. In short, they all work with a little massage work.

All of the '30's and even the early '31's had the cowl mounting tab in the same location as the '28-'29's. Sometime during the spring of 1931, Henry seen fit to move the two holed mounting tab that bolted to the wood body mounting block just in front of the A pillar back until the front hole in the tab ended up where the rear hole was before. I have read that this was done to accomodate some of the later outsourced coach built bodies.
During the remainder of the '31 model year, Ford mounted the in house bodies using the front hole in the tab to bolt thru the rear hole in the body mounting block. Perhaps one of the coach builders screwed up and this was the easy fix???

What all these guys said, not much/if any difference ... do keep in mind when you get to the actual mounting that right here is where you need to shim to get doors to align.

Man I learn something here every day! I've never come across this before. Now I have to keep my eyes peeled for a later frame. As Amish noted above, shimming is everything in getting the doors and the hood to fit right. If you get your door s working good don't be afraid to use a little "knee work" to pull them in or out to get a nice body fit. They are very easy to move.

  7. I Just set my body on the frame I got and found just this. I was kinda worried cause the front holes weren't lining up! So I guess I'll just use one bolt in the front.
