Want to put Ford 8" in my '36 with a CE parallel leaf spring kit. What year Ford models had these, how do I identify and is there something that would tell me what the rear end ratio is?
http://www.mustangandfords.com/techarticles/127_0310_ford_differential_builders_guide/viewall.html If you are lucky, there will still be a stamped metal tag under one of the bolts that holds the differential center section in, indicating the ratio. If not, you will have to turn the axles, and count pinion turns.
The JUNK mans way is too check the lower studs ... If you can get a deep wall socket on the bottom two studs ( shown above ) it is a 8 inch. If you cannot ... it is a 9 inch.
36,.. I used an 8" from a 2000 Explorer 2wd. Mine came with a 3:55, hat rotor disc brakes, and they even included the park brake cables. I paid $450 for it. That brake system is still in use, and parts can be found anywhere. Mine is under my 40 pickup, and I did have to re locate the spring pads, to work with the C.E. parallel spring kit. 4TTRUK
The 8" Ford rear was used in Mustangs & Fairlanes in the 60's, and in the Granada, Maverick, Mercury Comet & Mercury Monarch in the 70's I think the last year of production was 78 or 79. Nearly all have a highway gears 3.00 or less. The Maverick is the narrowest of them need to look for a V-8 in the 71 & 72's for the 5 lug rear, the later ones all had 5 lug. For a 36, a Granada/Monarch would be the best.
If you find a Mustang II or Pinto with a V-6 engine they will have an 8" with a 3:44 or 3:55 gear set and fit the maverick rearend just fine.
