My wife has been talking about a sporty convertible for a couple of years now. This summer I took her serious, so I put the '49 up for sale in hopes of buying her something nice. A couple of weeks ago we ran across a '97 Mitzubishi Eclipse Spyder. It was a pretty good deal so we just borrowed the money and bought it. She's been having fun cleaning it up (she even had me remove the vinyl dealer sticker and Mitzubishi logo), adding a few personal touches (this from a gal who could never figure out why anyone needed to put different wheels on a car when the stock ones look fine) and she really enjoys driving it. 2.4 liter 4 cyl w/ a 5 speed manual (she HAD to have a stick shift!). Her only complaint is that she can't get rubber from a dead a stop. So we're looking into "upgrades" that will get her a little more juice.
So, tonite I need to run to the store, about 3/4 of a mile down the highway.
I tell her I'm taking her car (first time behind the wheel for me).
Once I find reverse and get it backed out of the garage I throw a little gravel in the driveway just to mess with her.
I roll the front wheels onto the edge of the highway, rev it up and drop the clutch......weeeee, rubber across 4 lanes. I'm up to 60 in nothing flat and never get it out of 4th.
I'm beginning to see what kids see in these cars. They're fun is stock form, lots of aftermarket parts and they're probably paying a lot less for insurance for a 4 cyl than I am in a V8.
So if you don't see me at the local cruises it's probably because I'm hangin' with my peeps.
    Yo, peace out.

even modded most of them really arent that fast. you spyder stock will run in the high 15 second range...maybe even low 16's. which isnt fast at all. most kids my age only see how they wanna be like the fast and the furious and stuff, thats why they like them.

and you totally spelled Mitsubishi wrong.

You'll have to excuse Donzie he's new to this tuner stuff. I'll suggest he hang out at the Honda, and Mazda dealer. Maybe he can volunteer to wash the used cars. Something is bound to rub off. :)

that is so cool you found her something she likes. i guess you don't want to see the pics of the 71 Mustang convert i told ya about?? thats alright. the Mitsu is a much better looking car than a 71-73 Mustang any day.

Yup, my daily 04 Rexwagon is pretty nasty for a 4 banger wagon. Never been to the strip, but for a 4 banger japwagon I'm sure it'd run damn quick for what it is. On the street It's pure, unabashed, all wheel drive, turbo, Zippy fun!!!:D HOWEVER....You can spend ***LOADS of $$$ to wake em up a bit but cars like these will NEVER keep the likes of you or me awake @ night or haunt your dreams the way old cars do. It's like Ol' Bob Bleed said somewhere, somthing about p***ion for the old ****. When my coupe is done, That poor old subie is goin out to pasture! ( Lease anyhow!) When getthe bottom end of the coupe motor back from the machine shop, I'm gonna finish it off w/ this and make some BIG BOOST as the little ricer kids would say:D:D:D

Aw...big boost my ***, with that big ole pully on top I'll be 20% under driven with 5-7 pounds boost max. **** Donzie, all you have to do for fun in that Mitsubishi thing is drop the top and slow cruise with the sun in your face! :D

The thing with the Mitsu is that it FEELS fast. Its a quick car but youre used to a big car, one that likely rolls into corners and such. Believe you me, making an import "fast" is a waste of time. If you must screw with it, put a bigger exhaust on it(pipes not coffee cans) and an intake tube. Thats about it, otherwise your just wastin money.

Truly, I have to agree, what we consider fast, and what the fast & furious poser punks call fast is totally different...

To us, a 9-10 second run is fast, to them 14 seconds on a quarter is fast...

I know a good deal about this stuff, and even after a $13,000 turbo charger kit, $1,500 intercooler, and about another $15,000 in a Supra that competes in NOPI, it still runs 11's, which is fast, but with $30,000 for the engine for one of our rides, we'd blast right past 'em...

There are a lot of punks around here who want to be in the whole "fast & furious" scene and lifestyle...

I'm 14, and I'm into what started street racing, not some "souped up" little import, the T's, A's, and whatever else you find in the junkyard...

BUT HEY, IF SHE'S HAPPY WITH IT, IT'S TOTALY KOOL...

    Later.

    Troy.

Thanks for all the input. Yes, she's quite content with her new toy (although she really wanted a cl***ic Mustang convert., but that was way out of our budget.).
I know nothing about imports. What about these "chips" that they advertise? Just a waste of money?

I don't see me giving up rods or customs for an import....but it is a fun alternative.

back when that car was new, that was one of the prime candidates for us to buy for my girlfriends daily, i drove a few GST's, they hauled *** quite well, in fact it was nothing to grease the tires once the turbo spooled up. never drove a GSX, couldn't bring myself to justify the $$, but the GSX's were quite the AWD rocket well before you could get a WRX in the states. we ended up buying a new supercharged riviera, not near as quick as the eclipse, but a great cross country car!

i don't know what you paid for the rice rocket but this Mustang convert has a fresh paint job (kinda dull though. not a real great paint job) and a good running 302 for $7500 obo. it needs a power top motor but is otherwise pretty damn clean, even if it is the ugliest Mustang every made.

I took a ride in one of those new "z"s a few months back. DAMN, that thing was smooth and fast....really a different feel from the old stuff. It just felt tight. Almost enough to make me switch sides. ;)

That should be a 2.0 litre motor there donzie if its a 97. and stock n/a motor is pushing 145 horse. kinda like a 60 stovebolt in a model a but the spider is a heavy little car. Let me know if you want to give it a little more go. I "modded" one of them for my girl friend a few years back. Fun car to drive for sure. she was thinking about finding a gsx for the winter.

I always thought the factory super cars were quite rad, like the mitsubishi Lancer Evo, or the Suburu WRX Sti. They are screamers, and cost much less than a corvette. I'll probably never own one, but I think they're neat.

Congtrats Donzie, I know what you mean. My wife's daily (soon to be mine, job move) is a 2003 Saturn Ion 5-speed. It isn't going to win any races anytime soon but it has super tight steering and that little echo-tech and a 5 speed sure feels fun up to 50!
Ok I'm done talking about new cars...

interesting. The problem with tuners it that inevitibly, they are usually Honda Civics with body kits that end up looking like rice.

The whole thug life scene ***ociated with tuners is a little un-appitizing too.

It's always fun to see "what the kids are up to" but don't stray too far from hot-rods.

If it's speed you like, you should go test drive a Mustang Cobra......

Those chips dont make much power on gas engines. They make huge power on diesels.

    Mine too! :D

Low 14s from the factory, easily can dip into the 12's if you remove the 3 catalytic converters (YES, THREE!) and up the boost with $10 in hardware store parts.

Heck, get a Subaru STi and you can run 13.2 in the quarter right out of the dealership with a 2.5L...

Well you don't have to spend $30,000 on a WRX or STi to run 11s, that's for sure. You can do it without removing the valve covers. You can run And they are only 2.0L and 2.5L flat fours, not straight 6's like the Supra.

This Subaru runs 8.85 @ 147 mph, but it was more than $30,000 I am sure http://www.esxmotorsports.com/home.htm

Either way, they'll never be as cool as a 32 with a Flathead. :D

HMM, last I checked, running T's and A's for $50-300 are few and far between. Honduh's and Itsubiski's are cheap for the average teen, thats why they buy them. Simple economics

Too bad they don't make one that doesn't have too many ****ing doors!

I had a '74 Subaru coupe, back in the 70's. it was FUN!

(I also had a full power everything factory leather '55 Olds Super 88 2dr ht then.)

You CAN do both. This isn't about whether you're a Muslim or a Catholic or a Protestant or a Jew.
    It's just ****ing cars!

I like cars, any "cool" cars for the most part, but that doesn't stop me from going hiking with the Sierra Club in about half an hour...
You can have more than one interest in life without being a traitor to the others, with a few exceptions... Some will put you in deep doodoo trouble with the wife, but not a traitor to your hobby ;)

Wife's probably going to get a '06 Civic so I will inherit her '96 Civic, to either drive or sell... think I'll pimp it out....

    Don't like 'em......not one bit.
Got to drive a front wheel drive rocket last week though. made by, are ya ready? Chevy. The new Impala SS with a 303 hp 327 (that's 5.3 ltr to all you Canadians) V8 spinnin the front ones. Turn the traction control off, plant the right foot and watch the front tires go up in a blaze. The most fun wrong wheel drive car I've ever driven but still not as fun as being pushed by torque. Just feels weird being pulled around.
BTW...guy at work has a '97 Eagle Talon AWD turbo; kinda fast. He's mighty proud to have it running in the mid 14's. I'd be embarrased to have that kinda $$$ into that car and only run 14's.
