i have a factory manual, i have read every damn post i can find online and yet nothing works. i have reman starter and a new / reman starter drive gear for the old piece of **** ford folo through starter. all i need to do? is to get the damn starter gear onto the armature shaft but i cannot compress the top of the starter drive enough to let me get the drift pin in. its not been a good week with having a death in the family and then needing 600 worth of tires on the galaxie but if i could just go for a ******** drive it would help. and now of course its labor day weekend so no one is open to help and i havent a clue how to get this done. sorry for whining. i am just exhausted and my stress level is about as high as it gets, and my patience for things is very low. shoulda stuck with chevy.

Got a friend? 3-4 hands does this better. Clamp the end with the hole in a vise with enough clearance to get a couple of flat blade screwdrives between the vise jaws and the drive body.Insert starter shaft through drive lining the holes up. Pry with the screwdrivers to get the hole clear. Drop in pin. Done these more than once when working at a 24-7 parts house in the middle of the night. Usually made the customer help when I was only guy on the counter/in the store at the time. Good luck.

GOT IT! simply took a vice and slowly and as evenly as i could put just enough pressure to get the rubber piece to contract and then barely tapped the pin in. then i slid it onto the armature and slowly tapped it till it seated. then made sure it was even all around. got it installed in 5 mins into the car and she started. got new rear shoes for her today and the fronts on tues.

now tho i noticed that the starter whirs a few seconds after i shut off the key. now i am hesitatnt to drive too far for fear ill burn this one out too!

    any thoughts?

The starter will still be rotating after the engine fires and kicks out the drive. Time it 1-3 seconds for the starter to stop spining would be normal. What kills the starter is a drive that does not kick out of engagement after the engine fires. That causes the starter to come unglued inside. Starter slow to stop turning after drive releases can be a sticky ing sw. or solinoid.

thanks John. that makes sense. the last one was burnt and didn't "whir" upon shutting off the key so that makes sense if its was stuck and thus burned out.

so essentially with this Folo Thru starter it will engage the flywheel then kick out but remain spinning for as long as the engine is turning. Upon shutting car off there is that 1-3 seconds for the starter to simply slow to a stop spinning (sort of like when you turn off a fan the blades spin for a sec before finally stopping). Is this a correct synopsis and ok for the car/starter? this is all new to me so just trying to prevent any idiot moves on my part.

No! Once the engine starts it kicks the starter drive out of engagement with the flywheel. But as long as you hold the key in the start position the starter will still be turning ,release the key to on/run and if all is working correctly the starter motor will coast to a stop in a couple of seconds. If the key switch does not break the cranking circuit when released the starter will keep spinning. Same deal with the solenoid ,it sticks the starter keeps spinning. Very rarely ,very, a drive will not kick out and stay engaged with the flywheel. That happens the first time you rev the engine over 1200 or so the inside of the starter becomes many many pieces. to recap the only time the starter should be spinning is when the key is in the start position.

hmm. i didnt drive the car for fear of breaking something. i was just idling the car but not sure at what rpms. the starter gear was in its "closed" position when i installed it and i didn't "clock" it or anything. in other words the pin inside the worm gear had already dropped in lace and i simply got the starter in and lined up using the 3 mounting bolt holes. did i miss a step here? the solenoid is new. there are electrical issues with the car with the dash lights always being on (the oil and gen llights are always on when i have the battery cables attached) so i would not be surprised if this was contributing to it. just want to rule out each option. really wanted to drive it but wont until its safe and will make it at least a bit without burning out a starter.
