Hey guys im in the process of getting the drive-train for my 53 belair ready for mock up. I will be running a 250 inline-6 with a 2004r trans and a camaro rear end. My question is... with the 250 inline, is the engine block the same length as the original 235 that the car came with. I have read that the 250 will fit but I will have to get creative with the cooling fan or move the radiator forward a bit. Would it be a bit easier to recess the motor into the firewall a couple inches to avoid this?? I can do the fab work, Im just trying to get some ideas. Has anyone done this and do you have pictures??? Thanks in advance! Chris
It's your car , do it how you want ,But , the easiest thing is to reverse the wires on an electric cooling fan , put it in front of the radiator, and make it a pusher fan , lotsa room up there , and remove the tin fan and put shorter bolts in the pump pulley , I'm assuming you are going with the ac/delco alternator , that was on the 250 , also an easy /good choice
I moved the radiator forward, and run electric fans. My engine isn't as far back as it could go, but it's where I want it to retain the stock clutch linkage. The only issue I ran into is my radiator is so tall that I had to trim the hood brace a bit. It's snug, but it all fits and works great.
Thanks for the replies guys! kdrodworks316...I have heard that the hood brace had to be modified...any pics of that? Great build by the way! Im subscribed!
You call Patrick Dykes at Patrick's Trucks in Casa Grande, AZ and ask them for their short water pump and pulley! Then you will not have to move anything! Also I removed the fan completely and went with a slim line cooler fan from CCI. It is only 2 5/8" thick but really moves the air! Puller will not negatively affect the cooling quite as much as a pusher fan in front blocking the air will. Maybe not an issue where you live, but here in Arizona, I need all the cooling I can get!
