Just extended the length of my streetrod hood and was wondering if there was any shapeable metal trim that could be slid on the ends to both dress up and protect the cut ends? Something along the lines of those chrome slide on door protectors from a few years back. They protected the door edge when opening the cars doors. I'd like something along those lines that could be glued on or even tac welded on from the bottom side. Don't care about finish..probably will paint over them anyway.
Do you have the piece you cut off where it was folded? If so trim it back, and open it up, tap it on there.
Why not make some? If you have a brake.. I start the bend like normal, bending on the brake as far as it can go, then slip a thin strip of sheetmetal inside the V, before crushing it flat with another bite with the brake. Leave the shim in there, as you cut to length, and bend the curve to fit the hood. then you can remove the shim and it should work ok
I don't have anything...found some door edge trim on eBay...but it's all plastic. If they made something like fender welting in metal...that would work....could use my stretcher/shrinker to shape it. Wish I had a way to split some 3/16 brake line...
If you want a bead, take a piece of brake line tubing and slit it with your die grinder then tac weld it over the exposed edge.
At least he's honest. I think he means pre-48 vehicle. I use old brake line, I alwasy save what is not destroyed when I replace them and that work wonders for edges of sheet metal or rings around gauges so they don't look just stuck on a hole in the dash. If you must have it they sell that door edge gard in bulk in metal. You will have to look around but I know they still have it because I have a friend that builds high end street rods for a living and he has a roll in his shop.
This might sound a bit hokey, but when I changed the slope of the hood on my coupe I had to trim off the hem on the cowl end of my hood. I then used a piece of metal the same thickness as the hood by about 1/4" and glued it on with JB Weld. It has been that way for over 20 years and still looks fine with no cracks or seperation.
RE: My "streetrod" Gave it a shot today, spaced 1/8" holes on the rear side for final fit & tac welding. Used 22 gauge steel 3/4" wide & folded in half. Not going to need much finish work on the trim!
See there ya got it worked out. Only took a little time and some ideas from the peanut gallery. Looks good from here.
