One thing that I never realized until we watched the other video of the car spinning out and also this video is that traction on the salt is pretty dicey. You can hear the cars getting loose and they have to ease into the power until the car gets moving. I guess the tires being somewhat bald is part of that issue ?

What seemed amazing to me was the fact that the car never sounded like it was working hard! It just eased its way up to 277 and that was it. No sweat! Ride over.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Salt is a different surface than any of us have experiance with. It does not behave like dirt or a solid surface. The key on the salt is to get as small a contact patch as possible to create as much pressure on the smallest area. This compresses the salt under the patch and helps hold it together.

The traction is amazing when you can accomplish this. The AA/GL I crew on is actually lifting the front end 3/4 of an inch at 300 mph. it comes back down when the driver lifts. So it's not an aero lift, it's actually torque pulling the front up. 1200 HP and two 4 1/2 X 3 contact patches.

The slower speed and lower gear ratios til you get going are what's the biggest problem with wheel spin. Too much torque multiplication.

  6. Two things amazed me.

The speedometer numbers clicking off so fast and the ear piercing sound.

I'd love to take that thing for a spin around the block!! Too cool to see a 1960's design still doing what it was meant to do!

I got scared just watching the video - can't imagine what actually being in the car would be like, much less holding onto the wheel and driving that thing. What a beautiful machine. I never cease to be awed by what guys on the HAMB are capable of building.
