just wondering if anyone in or near the san diego area (lemon grove) can help with the installation of said windshield or can recommend a competent auto glass installer? thank you in advance.
I'd give Lemon Grove Glass a call. Its been quite a while since I last stopped in, but they did have a couple older guys that could handle it. Family owned since the '60's. I live in El Cajon, But don't drive through L.G. very often. Hope they are still open... PM me and I can contact a couple club members to see who they have used. - Tim
If you're going to give it try on your own, make sure there are 2 of ya. If you're using the stainless trim too, it ALL has to go on at the same time. Glass, rubber seal and trim as 1 unit is the only way it's going to go together so you have to have things more less lined up when you start. Good luck.....It took me 4 tries ...
Don't forget the little piece that goes in the center at the top. Like Noname said, only the top pieces have to go in with the glass. Leave the bottom trim clips loose-it will make sliding the lower trim on much easier, then you can snug then down.
Hey guys. Is there any kinda sealant involved??? I remember scraping some old shit off the car, But dunno if you gotta replace it, or with what?
Me and my wife put ours in back in mid-80's. We had no idea what we were doing but it hasn't fallen out yet or leaked. It's a project, do it yourself. I did add a clear sealer around the rubber later. Do as others said with the stainless. You can find helpfull instalation hints in several magazines. Getting the rubber to slip in using thin rope is the trick. Might be a thread in here somewhere. I knew about Lemon Grove Glass for years and I'm a few miles from there.
Bedding compound between the gasket and body. After the rope is in the gasket run a bead on the gasket where it beds in the pinch weld. Silicone between the gasket and glass. after it's installed. 3M makes excellent products.
very cool. a buddy and I are gonna give her a go this weekend, It's a brand new windsheild so im kinda nervous. We will go slow and keep our whits about us. The auto paint place here sells a whole lotta 3M stuff, Ill go grab some. I haven't found any REAL Good write ups im magazines, no luck there. If its a chevelle or mustang then yea i found like 20 full color spreads on it thanks for the info guys. I'll keep my fingers crosses
Ohh, Just found this on another site as well. Hope it can help someone too! http://www.trifive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=236
I would use spray bottle of soapy water and spray lightly into the groove, after the rope for installation is put in. This makes it a lot easier to pull the rope and getting a quicker and flawless installation, especially with new gaskets. Taking your time, stay calm, and never hit glass with a closed fist or excessive force. I usually tap around the windshield about 5" from the edge with a open hand, using my palm. I caulk around the windshield, between the gasket and windshield and body and windshield using primerless urethane; for the SAFEST INSTALLATION. I cut the tip of the caulk very small to insert at 45 degree angle between the gasket at body and the glass.Usually, leaks happen at the bottom corners bet. glass and gasket, so get that good.
Check out the pdf entitled: '16.1 - 1955-1957 Chevy Front Window Seal Installation' on the www.danchuk.com website (click on the 'downloads' tab, then select 'Tech Articles'). Scott/Gotta56forme
Thanks guys I was thinking of replaceing my cracked windshield but wasnt sure how labor intensive it was. Wasnt sure how the windshield trim went on either.. Gives me a bit of confidence to try it my self.
I installed mine with the help of my brother on my '56, and I'm pretty much an idiot. If I did it, I know you can!
Ahh super cool. This is a big help!. I got both the windsheild and seal from danchuk, but never even thought about looking for this. Now i just gotta figure out if im gonna put all the chrome on it. hmmmm
Johnny, Don't know if you know it or not but if you are refering to the stainless around the glass in the rubber, It has to go into the groove in the rubber and the glass installed in the groove in the rubber bEFORE you install it in the car. Sorry but ask me how I know This. I found out the hard way also. But the first try was a good experience. The second was a bit harder but keep slapping it it'll got. PS just installed NOS in the 55. Haven't pulled the trigger yet.lol. I'm scared. Every page in the instructions has warnings all over it and then 5 pages later after they have scared the crap out of you they say now go and have fun with it.lol. got her into the mid twelves and hoping for mid elevens with it. We'll see. Are you up and going? Just wondering haven't seen anything on your build lately. OK later yruhot........Doug
