So it's been a while since I've gotten to working on the ol' pickup, but she's itching to see the light of day under her own power. Problem is, the fella working on her (me) has little idea as to what some of the parts are, and less of an idea as to where they go! So I turned to the mighty help of the HAMB hoping someone could steer me in the right direction. Here's the first problem: I need brakes! Or it won't stop, and I'm not on a suicide mission as of yet... Here's a couple photos of the right and left sides, pretty much just backing plates with wheel cylinders, but I would like to find out what year I am looking at so I know what to purchase. I'm leaning toward the later '46 and up brakes? And the second: Here's the second question: Where the hell does this cab mount?!? Right now the cab is simply sitting on the frame in a rough location, and the radiator is not mounted, it's sitting on a piece of wood. What I would like are dimensions from the forward motor mounts to the lower radiator mounting flange, in the forward direction and also height-wise. There are some photos following to help clarify. From there I should be able to reference the cab fore and aft with the hood and sides. Finally, I need a height dimension of the cab. would like a measurement from the frame to the metal "tab" shown, which should help me get all this set up correctly... That's all I need for today! I preemptively thank everyone for the help! Mike
Hey Mike I should be able to get you some measurements tomorrow. Are you going to be putting the wood back in for the cab to sit on or are you going with metal body mounts?
Damon - Thanks for the help! I'll probably go with metal mounts as metal and I understand each other... JohnEvans - Forgive my ignorance, but can you school me on the differences in the late vs early style backing plates and how I can make sure I get the right parts for it? I know on later cars (OT 60s and whatnot) there's a lot of difference in width of brake shoes, etc, and I want to make sure that's not the case with these. Mike
Hi Mike-regarding your radiator sitting on a wood "crossmember"-truth is that it appears that the original radiator bracket looks to be missing from your chassis. They are usually rivetted to the front spring crossmember and front frame horns! Also 35 and 36 brackets are slightly different-suggest you hunt up a Wescotts or original chassis dimensions chart which will give you plenty of reference measurements
Yes Wescotts is great ..I am working on a full scale drawing in Visio of the frame using their dimensions. I just finished those measurements Mike .. I should have something up here soon.
I took several measurements that I thought would help you. Let me know if there is one you need that is not here. Just remember my grill, radiator etc have all been off in the past so the measurements may not be to factory specs LOL First measurement is from the bottom of the cowl (hangs over frame) to the frame end at the bottom. This one is shows from the center of the cowl to the lower edge of the radiator at the shell. This one is from the center of the radiator bolt to the center of the motor mount From the top of the frame rail down to the bottom of the radiator leg where the bolt goes through ... This shows the frame end to the radiator bolt center .... Here is from the front edge of the radiator to the grill ... about 4-3/4 inches EDIT DUH! IGNORE THIS ONE HA This one shows from the cowl edge to the first hole. I see the hole in your photo ... mine is taken from the driver side. Here is from the top of the frame going up the cowl (metal you show in your pic) to the rivets in mine ... These next photos show measurements from the bottom of the cab back to where the kick up starts on the frame. Ignore the running board as it is not 35 ford. Measurements are from the bottom inner corner of the cab corner where it begins to turn up beside the frame. (forgot this picture) this one is from the dust cover bolt on to straight across to the cab. Note mine is bent slightly. From the cab corner to two holes in my frame just befroe the bed starts .. you may not have these? This should keep you busy for a while!
The measurement from mount to support is not straight forward because there is a height change and I hope it is given in Wescotts pages. The cab height in that location to the original frame is easy if you still want it.
Steel - I'll take all the measurements I can get! I did notice the height change on that radiator support, and from Damon's measurements it appears to be about an inch and a half different. Thanks, Mike
I know this has already been said but here is a link to the wescott frame dimensions. http://www.wescottsauto.com/Tech/FrameDiagram1935-40.pdf
