question on brake drum spring ,54 chevy car

i broke the outer spring on the front brake hub of my 54 chevy car. what is it there for? balance or vibration maybe? i have another one, just curious what it is there for.

 

Squeal ,noise reduction . Those seem to be a 40s-50s thing.

 

Noise control - as far as I know nothing more as it pertains to function.

For you to wonder if it's bad that you broke it.

 

i worked at a place for a while that actually repoped the little clips that held them from rolling off.

 

Seen them well into the '60s mainly on GM cars. Also had seen many that are rusty and fell off on a customer's car.... never replaced the spring and never saw or heard of a problem with them not being on the drum.

FYI, a screen door spring will do the job. They too may be obsolete now, - - - -

 

Probably help cool the drums too, cheaper than fins.
