I have a pair of tube shocks for the front of my RPU. They are Pro Shocks. The ends are equipped with 1/2" sleeves. The problem is that I'd like to use a nice pair of F100 shock mounts I found at the swap meet as my upper mounts, and they have a 5/8" mounting shaft. I'm OK for the 1/2" on the lower end, wondering how I can change the upper shock end to 5/8".
Can you just slide out the 1/2" sleeve on the top? Most of those sleeves are 1/16" wall thickness, so if you remove it, it'll put you right at 5/8".
I'll take a look, that may be possible. If so is it ok to mount them that way with just the rubber on the shaft and no steel tube ?
had the same issues with O/T shocks, went to Ace Hardware & picked up a couple spacer type sleeves, pressed out the smaller one took a drill & SLOWLY drilled out the rubber just enough to press the new sleeves in,i think if you drill with a 1/2 bit & slicked up the new one & slid in the 5/8 you would be good. P/S we had to cut the Ace Hardware spacer down-they were to long, remember to tapper the ends.
I do this pretty regularly, I'll often weld a piece of scrap to the steel sleeve, this heats it up and you can then yank it out. Then I use a trimmed hacksaw blade to cut through the remaining rubber bushing (they are usually still way too small of an ID to use with F1 type mounts). Pick up four of these and you're all set. http://macsautoparts.com/early-v8-f...enger-51a-18197/camid/F30/cp/JS0R3CHL1075938/
I press them out on my hydraulic press and use them exactly the way you want to do it. You really don't need that sleeve in there at all. They will slip right on the F100 mounts with a little silicone and some twisting. Just put a thin deep well socket on top to do the pushing and a larger deep well on the bottom to act as a pocket and push it out. Vice grips will help twist it out after you get it about 1/2 way out. Don
