On Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend a small cruise & barbecue at a local retirement home instead of attending a much larger car show about 40 minutes away. We had such a good time seeing all the retirees looking at the few cars that came, they were in awe of them and had so many questions about the cars along with having photos taken with them. Even Elvis made an appearance. In all it was a great day and I had such a good feeling on the drive home. Included are some pics and sorry for the O.T. cars in photos.
Right on ! Sometimes meets like this bring out folks who have a lot more respect for our cars than some of the Cruise Nights that I no longer attend
Our club " Memories in Motion" did that back in May. The people loved it and I hope the same thing happens when I'm there.
Those folks had to be in 7th Heaven, must have brought back a lot of memories for them. Living down here in Florida we have a large older population and a lot of times when I am out driving my rod I will get someone who is up in years come up and ask questions about my car. Then they start telling you about the one they had that was just like it, except it was a 4 door and a Chevy. My ex GF Mom was in a nursing home and we would go visit her pretty often and the old ladies there were a hoot. I was in my 50's at the time and I would be walking by one of them and feel a pinch on my **** ! Nice of you guys to do that. Don
Quality, not quan***y. Sometimes it makes all the difference. That was a good thing you guys did. Thanks.
Here in the northwest that is how the real hotrod Lincoln was found, just talking with an older Gent one day and look what was found. good on you for caring about the great Gen.
Nice of you to try to put a smile on those faces. Everytime I see an elderly person I can't help but think: That while that old man or woman is struggling to walk, communicate and hunched over, they, no doubt are someone's parents and probably someone's sibling. Each of them had a life, probably had a family, paid taxes, had moments of despair and many moments of great joy. Some were in the military and some were the very best in their chosen trade. Each has a story to tell and each has worth and value as a part of our society and therefore are valuable to all of us collectively. While it's easy to look the other way or simpler to just pay no attention, every older person is a vault of knowledge and a wealth of the results of working, striving and succeeding in one way or another. Some of us are not much younger than they are. I hope someone asks me about my life some day. I hope that my lessons of success and failures will either teach or,at least, amuse whoever might grant me a few minutes. We all know how we feel when we hear a certain song or get behind the wheel of a car that we drove when we were young. Those moments transport us into a place of our youth and with that comes a sense of well-being for just that moment. When I get behind the wheel of someone's '67 Ford, Model A, etc., I am "there" for that one moment. Maybe ten seconds, maybe more. But, regardless, it does transform you. When elderly people see an old car it automatically reminds them of a time when they were tall, well and marching off to school or work one morning long ago. A time when life was good and they were without pain and personal challenges. Good for all of you to give these people a moment where they could "live" in a time for a few moments that makes them smile....
What a fantastic thing for you guys to do! Good for you! I work at a long term care facility and I occasionally film some of the shows I attend, I put oldies background music to the film and show it to our residents in the activity room. You should see the smiles on their faces!!
We have a show at our locol VA hospital as a Welcome Home event for all of our vets. There is no admission fee and they bring the older vets down from the nursing home floor and they have a blast. It will be Sept. the 29th in Poplar Bluff Mo. if anyone close wants to attend.
Mazooma- you hit it right on the head- now that I am on the Senior Citizen Menu I know what you say is right- congrats to the folks that went out of their way to put on that show for them seniors-
Wow, now I know why the very nice old ladies wanted to look at my back seat and walked away with a huge smile on their faces, and I thought it was the rolled and pleated upholstery. Thanks guys if you ever get the chance to do this. Go for it . I had such a good feeling when we left, and I will back to several other retirement homes in the area.
just remember, you will likely be in one of the retirement places some day too. many clubs do these types of mini shows, and go to VA Hospitals. another part of this is that many there never get to see their kids, if they had any. plus, many of us do not have our parents around any more. so, it is a plus for everyone.
THANK YOU, You are VERY right, and how soon we forget. I got my reminder and will be doing something about it
This is a great thing that you did for our retired elderly people in nursing homes. I'm sure that the smiles and questions made your day. Kudos to you!
I could never understand retirement homes. My Grandparents lived with us when they could no longer live alone. My Mother-N-Law lived with us when she got too sick to live alone. Matter of fact, I was the primary caregiver since my wife didn't get along with her Mother. My Mother-N-Law p***ed away on Christmas 3 years ago. Now, next weekend, my Mother is moving in. It was a wonderful you guys did and I'm sure much appreciated.
