I got a project in the works that I want to make door skins/inners for as well. PERFECT timing. Was thinking the same thing, swedging the skin over the inner panel. I was planning on formimg the crown in the doorskin the same way as well. Great to see that it all works out, gives me more confidence that I can pull it off.

    Do you have Mindovers DVD??

Glad to see you guys using the info on my DVD. I hope you don't mind me posting this, its not an A but my T body, not all done by hand tools but a lot of it was and it all could be.

This is my firewall and subframe all this was made with hand tools. except the parts I had folded.

    Part made...

The cowl skin, made in one piece. shaped by hand tools but the swages (beads) put in with a machine. Still hand made.

Don't want to hijack the thread but just show what is possible.

Dave, I made the replacement panels for my Chevy II wagon like I mentioned in my pm to you some time back, now I am ready to move on to something bigger and more complex. Your DVD, in combination with some of the stuff I see on the HAMB, has really given me the confidence to tackle things I wouldn't have tried before. I just watched it again last week, must be about the 20th time. The more times I watch it, then go out in the shop and try the techniques out, the more confident I get, and the more I learn. My new project is going to require a level of metalwork I never would have even CONSIDERED before. I figure there will be some "s****" generated, but I now have the confidence to just grab some more sheet metal and try again, until I get it right. Big thanks to you.
Now back to the topic at hand....

I have decided to go ahead and make a roadster pickup. If anyone can get me a measurement I would greatly appreciate it. I am looking for the width of the cab measured from the top / rear corner of the door to the other top rear corner of the door. An inside or outside measurement would work as long as you specify.

    Thank you!

I thought I might chime in on my decision to build a RPU in case anyone was interested.. Good story..

I have built a lot of ch***is and cars over the years. I have also built a lot of panel replacements and patches, but I have NEVER tackled a complete vehicle body. On the other side of the coin I have a great family and a couple of very young children who are still learning the ropes. We own a 29 Roadster that I have been slowly building to become my sons car one day. He works on it as well and has always known the car will be his one day. One day while talking to my son about something he had done I was reaching that point where a timeout or **** busting was in order. I told my son he needed to go to his room and think about his actions and I would be in the shop working. His reply was "oh well, your gonna be working on my Model A" anyway. My immediate comment was no, I will be working on my "Model A" and he walked away a little confused because he knows I am not the type to take back the car. That became the day that I started building this roadster.

It started out a lesson for my son, but has turned into a lesson for us both..

I should have ***led this thread "Lessons learned - Building a Roadster."

Looking great. I've got a son (still a toddler), and a daughter on the way. I already see the boy is hard headed, and many days like the one you just described are on the way. If I were you, either permanently make it yours, or finish it, only you enjoy it, then sell it and make him be there to see the deal go down. Put the money away for his college and don't tell him about it until he's about to start college. Tough lesson for him, but something like that would hit home I think. I only say that because my dad did something like that to me, on a smaller scale, and I think about what I'd do with my son when that day arrives.

Can someone please get me a measurement from their roadster? I cannot seem to find it anywhere. I need to know where the hinges go on the doors.

If you could measure from the bottom of either door to the bottom of each hinge I would really appreciate it.

    Thank you!

    Nice metal work,
you have inspired me. so much that i went out to the pile and grabbed me up some parts and started mending some metal.

thanks for the kick in the pants haahaha.

not really going for any specific year, just a little metal bucket.

Here's an update on the doors. I need to do some cleanup work and planishing, but I am happy with it. Thanks for the measurements!

If you are bored you can watch me fab a 1928 - 1929 Ford Model A door skin the hard way. Prior to what you see here the radius of the door was shaped against a flat surface with body hammers to create the doors shaped. At the end you can see a reciprocating machine was right behind me the whole time. I could have made it a lot faster, but where's the fun in that..

Straight from my DVD, you would have got a bit neater job if you had used a bolster or wider chasing (caulking or corking) tool like I show. But it worked.
