Im going through this now in OK trying to register my 53. Hasnt been easy, especially since no one can find the car ever registered in OK. I was told they purged cars over 35 years old that havent been registered in X many years recently.

Ct State Statutes, the last time I looked; said the "commisioner of DMV has the right to dispose of any records beyond 3 years ago"

Ct is a challenge when wondering why some old Ct cars have ***les, and some don't. That's because we did not have ***les on any cars before 1959.

Then at some point in the 60s, they did start using ***les on all ages of cars. Any cars that were already registered in CT at that time, got a ***le sent to them like a "grandfathered" type deal.

Then they screwed it up again later on (1980s?), and did away with ***les on older cars past a certain age, but you could still get a new ***le (if you wanted one) when registering a car, but at $25 higher fee. Most people did not do that.

From current news, the CTDMV will take your old ***le away from you, if you go in to register a new purchase that still had an old ***le, or from a car that was bought from a ***led state....and you will not get a CT ***le, because there are none issued on the older cars here.

No, we don't need a ***le on OLDER cars, but like I said earlier; get some sort of proof that the seller is the legal owner. You sure don't want to lose the car later if someone else does have legal papers showing "he" owns it.

EDIT, and I agree with HAMB's advice to do any paperwork legally by whatever your state does require...even if it's difficult. These threads are useful to some who otherwise might get into a bad situation by buying some random paperwork from some other car. In some states, the registration is used as a way to transfer ownership, and as you can imagine, a long time owner of a certain car, could have a dozen of expired old registration papers that might get into the system....and all with the same ID number!

The state of N.H. will not issue a ***le on any vehicle 15 YRs. or older. A vehicle could change hands 15 times in NH with a hand written bill of sale but I can see if it was sold to certain states it could be a problem!

Get the VIN checked. A local guy lost 20k buying a race car, a few weeks later the State Police showed up and hauled off the car. It had been stolen many years before it was turned into a race car.
