In fact, I don t want to paint a frame, my car is a unibody But it s the same deal, as it is under the car. It s a 1966 AMC, but not OT, same body than the 65, with just a trim change. So I hope it s still Hamb compliant In a perfect word, I would spray epoxy everywhere. But it cost about 150$ for a gallon with reducer, catalyst , etc. But I m poor, and have a gallon of Tremclad primer and another one of black Tremclad paint. Will this last ? Thanks. Phil
I think Tremclad is the same as Rustoleum. Sure it will last, and easy to touch up. For a driver, why would you use anything else? Rich
THIS! if its a driver why spend big bucks on paint that doesnt show save the money for the shinny part that shows
Right, IIRC Tremclad is the same as Rustoleum, it s the canadian brand name. A 66 is not realy a driver Even if it s not a 1932 ..... Can I cover rust spot with it ? Not so easy to remove everything ... I don t have a pit and don t want to sandblast in the garage, the car can t move for now.
Clean off the rust flakes, surface rust OK to leave. Wire brush or sandpaper or disc grinder OK. Give it at least 2 coats, preferably 3. It will last at least 20 years. The rust will not come back if you get complete coverage, that is the reason for multiple coats. 1 coat will get rust spots in it eventually.
Thanks a lot all. So it may work. I even have a compressor and a needle scaler, so I may be able to remove most of the rust. I ll PM each of you for the result in 2032
Tremclad is very tough paint, I painted the whole underside of my O/t ford truck which was extremely rusty!! Its been painted for 4 years and hasnt faded chipped or rusted. Ive spilled everything from ATF to brake fluid on it and it still looks good. It will suit your application perfectly!
Before you paint it wipe it off with final wipe. If you cant get final wipe use acetone or brake-Kleen. This will get the crud out of the nooks and cranies and give the paint the best adheasion. Ron
When i was building bikes thats all i used was black Tremclad on the frames I saw one of my bikes this summer it is 6 years old and still holding up.Make sure the steel is as clean as you can get it and if you think it is clean enough clean some more .I never used primer on the frames but i was able to bake it on with a few heaters in a sealed room
Thanks for the advices. It seems Tremclad/ Rusto is a quite correct way so . I don t understand "nooks" . I m french and english is far from my native language . What s a "nook "? Thanks. Even if writing a foreign language is funny Aber Ich kan nicht sehr sprechen ..
I spray with tractor supply $25 a gallon red oxide primer, then black, then hit it with roll on herculiner bed liner. Gives a durable surface that lasts longer than just paint. I used to use the spray on undercoating but the bedliner is much better stuff. The tractor supply (was valspar) primer has very good adhesion even to mild surface rust, no need to have perfectly clean bare metal.
I have treated all my trucks to Tremclad black paint jobs on the frames and floor pans. It holds up as good as anything else
