Here are some pictures. If you look in the background of the frame photo you can see my son's project that he has put on hold to help dad with the Sedan. Can't ask for anything more than that!

It's great that you are teaching and letting you son help you. He will come to appreciate what it takes to build a car. Just remember, payback time will come.

I feel bad for guys who never experienced building, or working on a hot rod with their dad. That was the best part of it for me. You are experiencing something rare in today's world Rick. Enjoy every minute, you two are making memories.

I never had the opportunity to works on projects with my dad. I did grow up seeing other kids that did and I always thought that would be cool. I was fortunate enough to have some of the older guys take me under their wing and teach me many things that I hope I can p*** on to my son. All 3 of my children have helped on different projects and I am lucky to have had that opportunity with my daughters also. Girls want to hang out with their dads too.

Yea, but you dont even have to stop spraying to lay down the 2nd & 3rd coats of paint. ;)

You coming to the Outriders Picnic tomorrow?
Suppose to cool down slightly. Free flowing beer & BBQ helps too. ;)

    Steve-
I can't make it to the picnic tomorrow. I took today off to go to an early Japanese car show in Long Beach with my son. My son took first place in the 70's Honda category. I'm not much of a car show guy but I am a proud dad!:D

  10. I know it's OT for here on the HAMB, but those early Japanese shows have some really cool stuff. Obscure stuff that you have never seen before, and being done by a very dedicated group of enthusiasts. I have respect for anyone who has p***ion for their hobby, no matter what it is.

A buddy of mine has a Toyota hemi engine that was pulled from a Toyota limo a long time ago. It looks very similar to a tiny Chrysler hemi. I want that engine bad.......

It's a great hing to be able to work side by side with your son. My son Michael has been there since we made chalk marks on the garage floor. The picture shows him torquing the heads on the hemi as we were doing final ***embly on the engine. It was a wonderful team and we will both cherish the time together all our lives. Congrats Rick!

You should be proud and happy that Michael wants to spend time with you. A rare thing these days.

I might be naive but I really feel those of us who have worked with our children in an automotive environment have taught them valuable lessons for life. The main one is that not everything is a disposable product and that with care and maintenance things can last a lifetime. Oh yeah, and hanging out with old guys isn't all bad. It amazes me how willing our generation is to give advice and help the next generation on their projects. I am definitely not the only one who has helped/advised my son.

Back to the Sedan. More prep and prime today. I feel like I don't have the patience that I used to have. I want to DRIVE it NOW!

I have 4 Daughters. 2 are into cars and my youngest is really into it. She goes to most of the runs with me. It is a great joy in my life to have her along.
Also Rick are you using water based paint?? and if you are I would really like to know how that turns out!

You are a lucky also. We have even more in common. My youngest daughter has a 1964 Ranchero.

I wouldn't use water based paint if they paid me (Fear of the unknown for me). I'm using old fashioned Acrylic Enamel.

Okay guys....before you get carried away....these parts of the frame are not visible once the Sedan is put together and on the road. Remember that in the "old days" you only did what was visible and not the overly ridiculous "I had the inside of the frame hand rubbed" stuff.

That's exactly what "can't see it from my house" means. An old carpenter I worked with used to say it. :)

Rick, Always remember these few but simple words, spoken by our friend Langan.

    " I'M NOT BUILDING IT FOR YOU !!!!! ''

    To along with the above
When asked why I did not paint my Roadster, It's in Primer, I always say
" I built it for me NOT YOU!!!!"

  26. I agree 100%, but I had to mess with Rick. I love primered cars because you don't treat them with kid gloves. You lean on 'em, you drive 'em down any road, and if it gets scratched, you break out the primer and spot it in.

The best cars I have ever owned were the ones that were primered or the ones with patina'd paint. They were like an old baseball glove that looked rough, but fit perfectly.

So... we're not going to pressure him to putty and color sand the inside of the frame? Some of the purists might gasp and call for a hearing.
