Guys I'm in need of someone who could rebuild a Hydra-Matic out of a 57 GMC near Burbank Ca. Any referrals would be appreciated. Thanks
Find the oldest transmission shop with the oldest technician in the area and ask them if it is something that they can do.
i did one a few months ago. they are pretty simple but parts are expensive and i had to order them out of new york. the 2 bands alone are 80 bux a piece plus a core charge! crazy espensive if you ask me but i couldn't find any cheaper alternatives. i think the guy i built it for ended up spending around 800 bucks with me. look in your area for a mom and pop transmission shops.
they are way more simple than the modern transmissions but for some reason people are scared of them.
i rebuilt one fom my 49 cad back in '75 and it still works. that was my first automatic rebuild and it wasn't bad at all. i took it to a local trans shop that had the special band adjusting tool when i was done. be careful that they supply the proper center tube that the clutch hubs hang from. the hole for the locating dowel pin can be offset from the original, and after 1/2 an hour of driving, you lose 2 gears because the end of the tube wears off and no oil pressure gets into the clutch pack. Here you go, these guys really know the older auto's especially hydros. Give them a call. http://www.transmaticparts.com/
Check a 'Hemmings Motor News' for a Hydro rebuilder "near" you if you don't want to tackle it yourself. The old '[Motors Manuals' are pretty specific on step-by-step rebuilds, but there are some special tools involved. Butch/56sedandelivery.
I would rebuild it, but the shipping would cost more than most of the parts. And when you say rebuild, you have to remember that some of the hard parts might need replacing too.
have used parts from transmatic glendale for years&years they may do a rebuild for you /if they will tell you who to call
