I am piecing together the exhaust for my 58 and we have a 70 dodge superbee with a 318 and its exhaust is 2.25 with 2 glasspacks and 2.25 flare tips and it has a loud crack to it. How would i get this same sound out of my chevy?? And i was also thinking of putting a flamethrower exhaust kit on it is this a good idea??
Thanks i understand using the glasspacks but idk if they are old glasspacks or steelpacks because they where on the car when we got it and it doesnt have a mellow smooth tone, it is loud and rapy and crackles on return to idle after a rev
I'm not certain, but the few cars I had the scavenger flair tips on did the same thing....I think that's what does the 'cracking"
I think smaller diameter pipes and long exhaust (all the way out the back) enhance the rapping sound.
On the flame thrower kit why do u guys suggest no?? i was looking at doing a fuel injected kit from hot licks exhaust is this a good brand?
been doing exhaust for 30 years to get the sound you are refering to i would use the old round thrush woodpecker mufflers as close to the engine as possible 2'' pipes and a few bends to get the gasses spinning BUT those mufflers havent been made in years and a used set if you can find them fetch $200 OR MORE HOWEVER cherry bomb just came out with the OL Skool glasspack check out there site I just used a set they are awesome and ABSOLUTELY give you the sound you are after again as far foward as possible
Sorry if my questions seem repetative and somewhat dull but im sort of new to this and am looking to build a late 50s and early 60s hot rod out of this pickup any advise?
Don't know about how good the brand is but to answer your question about why not it is just a lame idea. Flame throwers were a lame idea when they were stylish.
Put Cherry Bombs on it and nix the flame throwers. If you need flame throwers to make your car attractive or cool, you probably need to do more work on the car itself.
if you want a lot of crackling go with straight pipes . If you want a little less noise but will still sound good get a pair of directional glasspacks and put them on backward
Just a thought, don't buy those kits, all you have to do is use a distributor attached to a electric motor. then get a (Kill button) for your engine. I use a dome light door switch...
Agree on the mufflers up close to the engine, and a lot of exhaust pipe... I did the opposite, as I wanted a low rumble, not cracking, so went with some old stock Smitty's with full 2 1/2 exhaust, and only about ~three feet of tailpipe... Got exactly what I wanted, and love it.... Cheers.........
Milner is right on. I also started my exhaust career in 1981. Might I remind everyone the H.A.M.B. is pre 64 vehicles. Ray Fluggers flowmasters did not come out till 1982, so let's keep them on muscle cars and late F.I. stuff. Now before this starts a big ----storm, I love the sound of flowmasters but let's remember we're about traditional hot rods and customs. Cherry bomb and Thrush both make a red "hot dog shaped "glasspack with a perforated core. These with 2" or 2.25" full length duals will give you the sound you want. If your 58 is running a sbc it will sound like the 318 mopar, because we all know a small block chrysler is just a sbc with funny rockers. As for the flame throwers, I think they're pretty cool at night parades and cruises, things like that turn the young kids into car lovers.
