At Goodguy’s West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton this year and I saw an old friend and his dad. They came over and we were talking cars while they were checking out my ’30 Coupe. My friends dad and I were talking and he mentioned that the Ford Pinto emergency brake was what he used for a parking brake in his Model A’ projects. I have rounded up a ‘71 brake lever and hardware and the cables are on the way.

Most of the instillation seems routine except the brake lever, which I didn’t salvage. If anyone else has used the Pinto e-brake hardware on there project; can you tell me if the mounting flange mounts above the floorboard or below the floorboard?

    Thanks

  2. As an old pinto owner I can tell you without question that this Brake lever bolted from the top of the sheetmetal (inside the car) used fords famous cage nuts.

Here's how I installed a Pinto ebrake lever. My car is a special construction 'gl*** car registered as a '36. Mounted the ebrake lever from the underside. Lokar's twin cable system with a hardware store threaded bolt works great.

I had one in my T bucket and they are simple and work pretty good.

You can also mount them sideways back under your legs, near the seat. That way they are more out of the way and real easy to reach in an emergency.:D

I have the same basic handbrake lever I salvaged out of the MustII donor I had. Same lever and it mounts from the top and hangs under if my memory is right? It is a nice easy swap. Hooked up to a Versailles 9-inch. It will hold the car in gear no problem. Or get you home with no hydraulic brakes, from very careful experience!

Well, after taking my wife to Reno for a weekend getaway and going out to Branson Missouri for a reunion with my combat unit from Viet Nam, I finally got a chance to install the pinto hand brake. I drilled and taped a piece of steel bar stock to place the unit a little lower and I think it’s about in the right position now. One surprise was the new Pinto brake cable has two cable cover segments. I will likely have to cut the cable (discard the upper slegment) and install the lower segment to the brake drum & frame. Then install the cable to the hand brake much likeCerberus.

Anybody know what the upper segment was for?
