its been exposed to bad weather for long periods of time. Then when you've decided its time for paint, it equals more work. My 39 had its share of surface rust that can pose big problems down the line unless its taken down to bare metal..

Do you know what might be hiding under your primer? :D

I thought everyone knew that primer gave ZERO protection. Most guys I know painted their cars THEN sprayed on a coat of primer for effect.

Looks like you got it cleaned up nice, though. I can't wait to see that bitch with some shine on it. Primer's great to keep the fingerprint rust off your car while you're working on it in the shop, but it was never meant to be a topcoat outside for long periods of time. What color is that going to be? Blue again?

There's no way I would attempt to do bodywork for shiny paint, it would have more waves than the Pacific Ocean. Two of my friends are doing all the metal and bodywork. There's over 200 hours of work so far. These guys are great. They're not into Hot Rods (yet) but they restore Old Jaguars and Alpha's. Here's some more progress pics

    stripped the trunk
    [IMG]

    finished the trunklid

    Skirt fit like DOO DOO

oh, THAT'S what its supposed to look like flush!

rear roll pan was redone and the license box corners were rounded

As for color, I'm thinking a dark blue with either white or cinnamon red interior. Feel free to chime in.

Bodywork looks great. Dark blue would be pretty with white interior. Blue on red? not so much. Keep us posted, I really like this car

Dark blue with a dark red interior would look killer. I went to look at a 54 chevy once, it was painted, but the owner sanded it down and hit it with primer. Most of the primer had sun-burned off, all that was left was heavy surface rust. It was a real shame.

By far one of my favorite rods, so glad its from TEXAS! The bluebonnet look was so original, made it stand out.

Why are you redoing everything before summer is even over? Do it in the off months.

Thomas - I saw the work that is being done and I have to say. HOLY SHIT. End of story. I liked your car before - Can't wait to see it rolling in real paint - it always deserved it. I do have to say I had a vision of a really mellow silver with white tuck and roll with silver piping.

For the primer look use Zerorust. www.zerorust.com

It dries to a satin finish or you can flatten it. Two coats will last for a decade in most any enviroment. Another nice thing about ZR is that you can paint right over rust as long as all the loose stuff is removed. If you have pits then Bondo right over the ZR, perfectly chemically compatible.

If you buy White then it can be tinted to any color you want simply by using an alklyd enamel.

    Good stuff a low cost.

man, i am intrigued. you have used this stuff, and it works well? it applies to bare metal and needs no primer or topcoat? it comes in a variety of colors? somebody pinch me.

have you used the "crystal coat" gloss topcoat they sell? if so, how does it look?

    you got the cogs grinding...

Ive been using ZR for several years now. If going over new or shiny metal then wash it down with ZR Prep Step in a 2% water solution. It will etch and give the paint super adherence.

Since it is an alkyd based paint it is somewhat UV sensitive. The Crystal Coat prevents the UV problem and gives varying degrees of gloss depending on how thick a coat. Some on the HAMB have added a bit of CC to the final color coat as well as adding a PPG flattener to give true hot rod primer look that holds up well. Ive also seen some guys tint ZR white for all sorts of colors and effects.
Ive got some Crystal Coat that is excess to my needs, selling quarts and gallons. PM me with needs and Zip Code.

JC Whitney has a sale on ZR Black ending some time this month if not already.

cool man, i will let you know...

  18. Sounds vaguely like the directions that come with POR-15, the UV stuff, the need to etch clean metal, how it likes surface rust, etc. - it related in some way (same formula maybe?)

Not even close! POR is a thick goo like a tool dip. ZR is a real paint that goes on in thin coats. ZR can be sprayed without an air suit as needed by POR.

    Thanks Slazz and Kustom.

Kustom, check out this pic, its a better shot. I think you should build flush skirts! They add a sleek look to the rear, don't you think?

You must have a different POR-15 than the one I and others have been using, because what I have here is not "a thick goo like a tool dip" unless I let the can sit out open for hours, and even then it can be thinned out again. I have always applied POR with a brush so no air suit is needed.

    i love this car.

question - is the zero rust stuff as impossible to remove as POR? i would never use the POR i'm familiar with on the outside of a car because you'd need 500 sheets of diamond coated sand-paper and about 3000 hours to remove it.

i only ever use that shit on the inside of rockers and stuff... it sets like crazy glue.

I'm sorry to see that happen, since it had the striping by Skratch on the decklid and all, but luckily it's near the end of the summer. It looks like you have it taken care of pretty well...Just turn on some good tunes and work away

I'm about set on dark blue, unless I see a color that I HAVE TO HAVE. I'm looking for a 39 chevy grill if anyone knows of one in good shape. I have a 37 Zephyr grill that I was going to put on here but not sure anymore.

donovandagger- I'm glad you're doing ok. I've been wondering what happened to ya. This car is from Nor Cal but is getting a TEXAS (even though I'm from Nor Cal) makeover :D for the better of course.
