A week after going to Kalamazoo, I thought the car show season was winding down. I was up early Sat Morning and saw that a local show, and normally a well attended show, was taking place in a few hours. With the Kalamazoo dust and bugs still on the '40, I gave it a quick cleaning and off I went. The show was at one of the largest Chevy dealers in our area and it was free, with a free lunch and I wasn't doing anything for a few hours, so what the heck. After the judges went through all the cars, the owner, Bob Pulte, went through the lot to pick his show favorite. He stopped and talked about how smooth and rounded the '40 was and that it really looked streamlined. I said thank you and as he was leaving, he asked what year it was and I said it was a 40. He nodded and as he turned and left, he said that was the year I was born. I said to myself, damn he's old!!! After all of the top twenty plaques were given out, I was a little surprised I did not recieve anything but really didn't care. Just as I was about to turn and leave, the announcer said there was one more Owner's pick of the show award to be given out. They called my name and boy was I floored! I walked up to recieve a 3 foot trophy with a Fifty Seven Chevy on the top. I guess they thought the plentiful and gorgeous '57 was going to take the dealer's pick as usual. What nice surprise to a cool afternoon. Actually there were plenty of more expensive and nicer cars there but I guess the old Coupe that was his age rang louder that time. PS-The owners name is Bob so on the trophy is my name like it's personalized! Rap
thats cool, i've got enough "dust collectors" that i really don't care if i ever get another one. but, it is cool when you get a "pick" trophy. the owners age probably helped. he can remember chopped, skirts, and white walls. hard telling what he has owned in the past, and you've got a good one. congrats!
A free lunch, free car show and best of show? Good deal. I know the feeling. First time out with my beat up 55 Chevy wagon, a Fathers Day show, I won first in cl***. I was disappointed when I didn't even get third. We were walking toward the car to leave when they yelled my name ! This was in late 80's when wagons were only used to tow the show cars to the shows. Trophys are nothing but dust catchers, but now and then great to win! Yea for you!
i went to a show with my then 12 year old son. they had a million cl***es. i wa the only tbird in the tbird cl***. so i won. but i sent my son up to get the trophy. he was way jazzed , he held it all the way home. it sat in his room untill just a few months ago. that trophy was special to him
That's a mean looking old coupe dude, congrats. If you find a woman that looks like that from the back you'd better keep her! Your story reminded me of the time I parked my 64 Falcon Sprint outside a show and returned to find a trophy and nice note inviting me back. These kind of things make your day.
Thanks for all of your comments. I hope to continue to just go to shows but not enter to compete. I'm a firm believer that one award per year is more than enough for anyone. Besides, I always get to drive this car home so I already have won big time!!
Good looking ride, congrats! I was a little disappointed a fella who owns one of the largest Chevy dealerships in your area, and is the same age as your car didn't have a clue as to what year your ride is.
Cool to see a decent looking trophy rather than a welded together mess that has somehow become the "kulture" standard.... congrats!
The owner is 72 years old! He just came from a golf outing he said. Enough said. At least he had his gl***es on straight!
Are you saying that you have more cool cars on the east coast? How can you make a statement like that without ******* everyone else on this board? Wow, My car is nice, and I never said it was cooler than anyone else's, but to say your area is cooler is definately UN-COOL! Rap
I dont know but I think Mo was saying that a car this cool would get over looked ,and some tuner with big speakers or a new mustang or camaro with 20's is more likely to be best of show. maybe not though .
Quite the contrary! I'm saying, where I live, Best of show would have gone to anything but a cool Custom! And I don't worry about ******* off the folks where I live, cause they know it's true!
