Could someone help me decide which to put in my car? it has a 4.10 rear end, a mild 327 and its most going to be street driven. Ideas?? BTW this is my first manual trans swap so any advice on flywheel weight would be great too, heck ANY advice will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

I doubt you'd want a wide ratio with that rear gear. First would be good for pulling stumps.

the car will weight around 3200 with me in it...so about 15lbs or 20lbs?

  6. close ratio 220 is what you need. if you had say a 336 rear you could use a wide range 254 box.

You should use a close ratio trans...with a wide ratio 1st gear is lower, that coupled with your low rear gears would make 1st gear last you about 5 seconds when you drive it...it will wind out really fast and you wont be moving. With a wide ratio you get to wind out a little in first gear and it wont seem like a granny low in a pickup truck...my buddy uses later model lighter flywheels in all his cars...I regularly see near new aluminum flywheels with a clutch insert at swapmeets here for about $100 or so..

Close raito Muncie transmissions had a 2.20:1 first gear....& the wide ratio had a 2.54:1 first.

what about the new Richmond 4 speed units? the tallest first gear they offer is a 2.43...would that ratio make my car drive like a dump truck with that 4.10 rear??? if i were to get one of those, would you recommend i throw in some 3.89's or 3.70's instead of my 4.10?

    With a 4.10 rearend you may want to consider a 5-speed. I installed a TKO600, 5-speed close ratio, 3.73 posi, mild 350/300 hp, in my '56 Chevy. It's a 3200 pound car.

Good call man...i used to run the 4.10 with a TH350 :-/ it was fun when i was 17, but not really that enjoyable anymore haha. are you satisfied with your cars off the line acceleration? is it a small block or big block car?

Close ratio M22 in my '55 with 4.10 gears. Good street setup w/ 327 as 327 winds up good. Quick, quick, quick off a dead still start.

Cool stuff man, are the rpms actually reasonable at highway speeds?

The 5-speed suggestion becomes more feasible if you were running 3.23 ratio or thereabouts. 5th is usually an overdrive in certain factory trans's.
Then the lower gears would still launch OK, but conserve on the top end.
