I like the winner, but man that black coupe is ***Y!!!

  2. I agree. I love a Hot Rod with the performance to back up the looks, but I can completely understand why someone wouldn't want to thrash a car that they just invested big bucks and thousand of hours into. Maybe in a couple of years, after it's gotten it's rock chips and road scars, but not when the car is fresh and still on the show circuit.

It would be like spending all your hard earned money on a brand new African Zebrawood floor in your house and then walking around on it in golf shoes. You wouldn't do it... at least for the first few years.

  5. It is you Chris and Dean that deserve the thanks. It was an awesome weekend. I haven't been that excited in a long time.

    Best Regards,

I personally am blown away at the quality of all 5 cars involved...I've seen the sedan in person and he does drive the **** out of it! I really really like the black coupe! The un painted 33 is absolutely balls out bad ***, I'd love tosee it come back next year in black. I also love to see these guys beat the **** of the cars on the drag strip but some of them may not have been completely shaken out, or the owners may not appreciate that (its their baby out there). Personally the winner which is absolutely beautiful was my least favorite car. Thats not taking anything away from it because I'm sure its over the top nice! Just my opinion.

As far as voting if you think any of these cars are too "street rodish" or gimmicky (bare steel) just wait and see what you would get if the m***es were voting!

Congrats to the top 5 builders and owners those are all beautiful rides, that I could only aspire to compete with just once in my life!

These are all beautiful cars, but then again, at this level it is expected. Out of the ones in this thread, the black coupe would have my vote. The blue Brizio built roadster is nice, but it's not what I would consider a hot rod. I suppose the subtle differences between a hot rod and street rod is something that could be debated until the end of time. It's really hard to explain to someone that's not a real car person. Hot rods and street rods can come in all shapes, sizes and variations, but I think the root difference lies in the car's at***ude. You say, "how can a car have at***ude"? It's an inanimate object. But how does it make you feel when you look at it. A street rod can make you feel admiration for the car or builder, or even leave you in awe of the craftsmanship and detail. But a hot rod reaches deeper. It's a much more primal feeling. They almost bring a mischevious smirk to your face, or like they are the embodiment of rebellion. It's one of those things you may not be able to describe, but you damn well know it when you see it.

This would have been my pick. Outstanding car, drop dead gorgeous! Congrats guys! Lucky owner indeed.

Can't say I don't agree with you, however, (keeping in mind that I didn't see the other 4 cars) Tom's 32 had plenty of "at***ude" when he pulled into Troy's shop Wednesday afternoon. I think sometimes a car's at***ude is simply a blend of the builder and owner's ideas. This guy beat his car across country (and I'm sure had a ball) because it was designed to do that. He made the trip and was given the pick. On any given day, any of the top five could win the marbles, but however it was decided or voted on, the Brizio car made the cut. Hotrod, Streetrod, call it what you will, it's an excellent car. Stu

It would have been hard to pick one car out of this group.I can say that Darrly and Sid were great guys and i am glad they got the pick.I believe they are both Hambers also.I wonder how many of the other builders are here on the Hamb?

I'd like to see a 'PEOPLES TOP 10"...voted by the people.....you could still have the Pro's Pick, but even things out a little....if your going to have top 10 Pro Cars...have top 10 Peoples Choice.....you could have a Street Rod of the year by the people and one by the Pro Builders.....Need to get the people back into the act........but if they did away with the trophies completely, I'd still attend.....I like the Goodguy Shows...........I am a little tired of a builder voting for the other builders car he built at this show and then he votes for the car you built at the next show.....it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out whats going on.......Just an opinion, not to make anyone mad..........

Just wanted to jump in here and touch on a couple things.
First... the 1/8th mile drags. We all arrived at Muncie dragway... they had us lined up and brought the cars out just like any drag race... side by side. Do a warmup burnout, stage, and go! After the first 4 cars went... it started to spit and sprinkle pretty good. the starting lineman actually told everybody else to take it real easy... especially where the transition where rubber changed to concrete. Everybody only made 1 p*** and left to head back to the speedway.
2nd... each car that signed on to try for Hot Rod of The Year was given a checkpoint sticker on the window(see below) and at each checkpoint, got a sticker when completed. If you didn't get a required green sticker, you didn't get to play... so to speak. Those were the requirements to compete. I give mad props for the cars that drove from the West coast to the show. Surely it was a ton of fun, but it wasn't a requirement to compete and i hope it wasn't used in the process that eliminated or chose the top 5 cars!

  18. First off, congratulations to Tom Gloy and all of the finalist. Every year of this compe***ion (there have been 7, all winners have been 1930-33 and none had fenders) there's been some controversy and differance of opinion, which is great. This comes along with anything we have a p***ion for. I'm sure that the rest of the Terrific 12 catagories have the same. The bar has definatly been raised for all of these coveted awards. All of these picks are very subjective and there's no doubt that details of the builds and the trip to get there are a few of the facets that factor into the selection process.
As far as beating that poor dead horse. "A Street Rod has bag chairs and a dust mop in the trunk, a Hot Rod has tools and a set of gears" (my attempt on opionated humor"
The Hot Rod of the Year has developed into a sort of Great 8, held outside, on the road, in the elements, motors running....and that's not a bad thing.
It's a day to get to hang out with some of the coolest cars and their owners. When it's all done, this is still the best day of the year to be a hot rodder. Amen.

The first year of Hot Rod of the Year, 2006, it was advertised as a round robin elimination to be run saturday at IRP. The cruise was friday. Rain threatened saturday, so a last minute decision was made to run one lap friday afternoon just in case of rain out. Well, it rained all day, and since then its a one lap deal. I had planned on a spark plug change, flip the quickie gears to a 4.62, throw the nitrous bottle in it, and have fun on the saturday eliminations. I never thought I could win, I figured I could make hits at Indy for free. Well, I won the first HROTY and along the way met some really neat people, like 3W Larry, who should have won if his brand new car didnt break, and Larry who started this thread, who did win. This is still the only big award where ya gotta drive em. One side note, the only contender for this award Ive ever seen pull the wheels, the eastwood tribute 32. *****in car, if it ever goes up for sale I want it.

Did the rootbeer Deuce compete again this year? Wasn't it last year it was stolen on Thurs or Fri, and then found abandoned on Sunday? Just my opinion, but it had way more "hot rod" at***ude than any of the other top 5 this year.

  23. Yes he did compete this year. Looked good and performed well. I think he was quickest at the track (7.45?). He did get a pick for 'One Fine Duece".

Yeah, I guess Jason got after it in the rootbeer 3 window but still held back a bit so as not to tear up anything. THAT, to him, was what he thought "getting style points" was about. I wholeheartedly agree.

Of the final 5 contenders...Brizio's car was killer, saw it at the GNRS, but HRxD's black coupe and that olive sedan were *****in'. Pinkees coupe was bueno, hope it gets a paintjob.

Being the father of the Hot Rod of the Year award and a judge, I have to say that this year's group was the hardest ever to decide on. There were a good TEN cars that could have made the top five. I think we did pretty good getting it down to the five. Getting a winner ****ED though. In the end Tom Gloy's car won out. The complainers would heve complained no matter who won. The winning roadster is bad*** in every way and it's a driver. So many people on here whine about how the highend guys dont drive their ****. Well, I'm here to say that 98 of them did....all the way from the west coast to Indy. Rock chips, bugs, hail and all. Cars broke down and everyone pitched in to help anyone who needed it. My perception of many of these guys changed A LOT on the trip.

It's easy to play Monday morning armchair car judge, but if you weren't there for the entire Friday and Saturday program, you are just throwing stones.

If I was picking one to own, I'd pick Henry's Tudor.

    I agree. It definitely is.

BTW, the Pinkees coupe is getting painted.

  28. I too expected a bit more whining (from those that where not there to feel the experience of the day). We had a great time, as we always do. Even felt the pain of others. I agree with the top 5, but the black 33 coupe made me smile.

While I agree that the winning roadster would be my last pick of the 5 as a car I'd actually want to own, it is none-the-less a piece of art and he gets FULL credit for the long haul to Indy.
