I busted a few of these, and the rest are rusted enough that I figure it is a good idea to replace them. I think that they are 3/8, but I'm not sure, and the manual doesn't say anything about them, so I was wondering if anyone knew offhand the size that I am looking for. Thanks.
Is there any reason I can't just use an appropriately sized bolt? My local Lowes has Grade 8s, is there any reason why that wouldn't work?
Are they bolts, or studs? I thought most all Mopars back then had studs holding the exhaust manifolds on. My 56, 57 and 58 Hemi's all used 3/8 studs, co**** thread into the block and fine threaded nuts holding the manifold. A lot of them went into the water jackets as well, so you might need a dab of sealer on the threads.
Studs, and you are right, I think one or two of them do go into the water jacket, I'll put something on those. Bolts would just be easier to grab and throw on, all the auto parts stores around me are little dinky outlets that don't have ****, so I either have to order off the internet, or if I go with bolts I can just run to Lowes. But I have been reading that the bolts can put some unhealthy pressure on the threads, unless that is just blown out of proportion. Basically once the new intake manifold goes on, these things ain't coming off for a while.
You might try a hardware store instead of the home improvement places. Most every hardware store around this part of the country has quite a variety of studs in their fastener section. You could also order them from McMaster Carr and have them in a couple of days.
Forgot about McMaster, that would work. Unfortunately the hardware stores in my neck of the woods also ****, but McMaster may be the best solution.
If you do plan to take it apart anytime later, get some anti-seize paste for the threads, either way.
use some heat like squirrel said or your gonna be sorry as hell, studs break off and then the real fun begins!
