Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by redlineracer42, Sep 26, 2012.

  1. I need to rebuild the upper hinge on my driver door.Does anyone offer this service for my 42 Studebaker Champion coupe? I would fix it if I had the correct parts.Of course it's an odd size can't just walk into Napa and get a hinge rebuild kit...I looked alot...Any ideas?

Have a pin and bushings made at a machine shop. If you have a local vocational school with a machine trades program, they can make it and you save a few bucks.

A couple of strap hinges and some duct tape. Weld it up and climb in the other side. In through the windows Dukes of Hazzard style. ****ty ideas, but you asked for any ideas. See you this weekend at Cordova.

Or find a used hinge off the rear door of a four door parts car? transfer the parts to your hinge.

A.) Is it a typical setup with 2 bronze sleeve bearings and a pin?

B.) What size is the pin? What size are the holes in the hinge?

C.) Have you considered drilling the hinge holes to the next larger standard size and buying sleeve bearings and pin to fit that?

    Edit:
    D.) Also look here: http://www.studebakerparts.com/studebakerparts/store/s/agora.cgi?product=door2&xm=on

We case hardened the putty knives we made, got them pretty hot and dipped in a powdered chemical. I think we also hardened the ends of the center punch, I don't remember how hot we got them just the ends, then quenched in oil.

It depends on what steel you're starting with, too.

And adding a drop of oil every year will make a mild steel pin last a long, long time

  13. Long story short...So far I am a go for Sat.! Gotta make some test flights yet tho...we shall see...

  14. Ya I just couldn't remember water or oil.I was thinkin it was oil...thanks!

Now THIS is rebuilding a hinge!

The lower hinge shows the rotted hinge with the br*** bushing showing through.
I removed the pin and bushing and replaced it with a piece of 1/8" pipe that happenes to be the same size as the bushing.
I then mig welded the hinge, letting the molten metal flow over the br*** pipe.
A little grinding and the old bushing, that was not worn, fit in like a glove.
