ok im working on a 55 chevy truck with no motor but originally came with a 265 or 283 with front motor mounts. the original mounts are still there with the crossmember mounts for the bell housing which i still want to use. i found a 305 online out of a 70s camaro with side mounts, does the block have holes for front motor mounts also? otherwise ill have to purchase a tubular crossmember to run the side mounts

  2. You can use a tubular, & probably the easiest.
you could get a Hurst horseshoe front mount, but then you'll need the mid mount configuration.

I think the 305 blocks have the holes, there were 400 blocks made in the 70s that did not have the holes.

Best way to be sure it to ask the guy with the engine. We can't see it, either.

I do believe they are there on the 305 but they may not all be finished andhave treads, not a big issue. If you use a Hurst type you will need to use the same bolt holes. JW

The 305 will drop right in, mounts are the same. The top right hand "motor mount bolt hole" goes into the fuel pump boss, some guys like to use a little sealer on that bolt so it does'nt weep oil. IF your truck has a Hydro/Hydra-matic, of the dual range style, the flywheel may need to be machined for crankshaft flange clearance. When the early hydros were used with the 348,409, and BBC engines, this had to be done. I'm not sure of the 327, 350, and 305 engines, but I'd check it out. The 265 and 283 engines (and the Z-28 302 engines) had a round crankshaft flange; it's when there is a balance weight that there is interference. Butch/56sedandelivery.

The 305s I built in the past had the holes drilled and tapped for front mount...

Even if the front mount holes weren't there the pads would be there and one could drill and tap the holes. I'd have to think that the blocks that weren't drilled and tapped from the factory would be pretty rare now as the only went away from that for a year or so and some later engines used some of those holes for accessory mounting holes.
