So I'm tearing down my axle so I can send it off to get dropped. I had to heat up the nuts on the perch bolts to get them loose. Now the perch bolts are stuck. Do just put heat to the axle just like i did to break the nuts loose or destroy them with a hammer and expect to not use them.

Depends on hurry big a hurry your're in... I've freed up some seriously stuck perches by heating then quenching with penetrating oil. Then letting it sit soaking up some Gibbs or WD-40. Repeat the process a few time...Sooner or later they'll come loose. probably sooner..

Don't wreck the old perches if they are 32-34

There are tons of threads on frozen perch bolts on hamb. Lots of different ideas. Seems like the last couple of threads were going towards using a strong air chisel with a blunt bit, after soaking, or heating them and letting wax seep in.

If I do some more, I will try the air chisel this time

Getting perch pins out with no damage here is a thread showing a cool home made tool if you are doing alot of front end tear downs. Short of this, heat, WD-40 or similar and a press or hammer.

I have been using a pointed tip air chisel with a ring welded to it - It holds it center in the perch olt. I heat the axle and take the chisle to it..... If it doesntmove I quenck with oil wait and hour or so and try again.... It's never taken more than 2 tried since I started doing it this way ( Joe Cast gave me the Idea - I went to grab a pointed chisle and found this one I welded a washer to. ) Havn't messed up a perch bolt since - Also works kick ass on hollow king pins

I just did my heavy '32 axle perches.
Heat to cherry red.....includng nuts....they'll come off then drive the perches out with a drift.

i can get them out if you want a long road trip. I wrote the thread referenced in post #4. I can fix the threads if they get damaged. No charge. Good luck.

Iv had the most success by
    1. Put the entire deal up the press (PITA)
    2. Put about 10 tons of presser on (w nut lose but still on)
    3. Heat axle front and back. ( be ready for loud bang:eek:)

In my experience oils don’t do a thing until the part in question has been broken lose

I started fightin one last night and got the perchbolt to move a little with heat and sledge hammer but i can't pound on it further. I put the axle under the legs of the engine hoist and tied a strap to the perchbolt and tried to draw it out - no luck. I added heat. Won't budge.
I have it soaking in oil/pb blaster and whatever else i can find and my next attemp will be airchisel, when you guys mention a ring welded, is it to keep the chisel bit on the bolt?
    Thanks, oj

The 2nd one was a bear, i did what others suggested on here and heated it, quenched it in oil, added some beeswax to the mess tried the air chisel without luck. I repeated and whacked it with a sledgehammer befor oil and wax, then did the air chisel and it popped right out.

Got both of mine out today. Put my torch with a rosebud on it got both sides dull red and drove it out with a drift and hammer. I galled the threads when the nut came off so prob need to replace the perch bolts anyway anyway. I couldent get a air hammer but my traditional hammer worked just fine
