I'm trying to help a friend get his model A roadster OUT OF MY SHOP!

His rebuilt flathead had the wide belt water pumps installed by the engine builder. We found and bought a wide belt fan ***embly.

    The pulleys dont line up??
The forward groove on the crank pulley and the water pumps line up perfectly but the fan pulley is forward of everything.
    Whats the scoop?

Also note the crank pulley, the engine builder who installed it says its hoky but it will work?
    Could this be the problem?

Please note: Yes the Mll front end is being changed also, dont yell at me.

    Rong stuff!
Lower pulley is about '39-48 truck double sheave, pumps are '48-52 truck. Crank pulley is WAY forward, either loose on shaft or installed against a '50-53 seal sleeve thing--you can see the early grooved seal projecting out in air!
You need '49 pas--'48-52 truck crank pulley, which will drive pumps from inner sheave, fan from forward sheave.

Looks like you have late pickup truck wide belt 8RT water pumps, but a 59AB fan ***embly? Wrong crank pulley for the water pumps.....you also need a truck wide belt crank pulley......it looks different than what youve got on there.....it's a double sheave pulley and the sheave closest to the engine is slightly bigger in diameter..........

Now...when you change out that pulley (you can mail it to me to find its way back to a proper early motor...), note the spiral area visible behind it on your picture. Naturally, that is supposed to be pushed back into engine so spiral area is on the seal. Your pulley MAY just be floating where it is, with nothing between it and the timing gear, OR it may be solidly spaced forward by one of those spiral thingies! Reasons, problems: That spiral part is integral to pulley on '32-48 and all 1949 late pulleys. On 1950-53 pulleys, it is a separate piece...obviously, if you find a full length pulley and the spiral part is in there, you need to either extract the part (GREAT fun) or cut off the pulley at the machined step between the two areas. I spent a LONG day discovering this piece problem in a nearly dark garage long ago.
If the piece is in there, removal can be accomplished by pulling the timing gear or by expanding the part a bit with a chisel attack.

I am sure that '49-51 Mercs had the narrow belts and pulleys.......I have a '50 Merc engine and that's what was on it when I got it fresh out of a running car.....

Check me if I am wrong........anybody?

'49 Merc wide, now a rare pump. '50-51 narrow. Changeover, as with the two types of lower pulley construction, probably not exactly coincident with model year changeover.

Yep 49-51 Merc had the old style pad mounts with narrow belts like 50-53 Ford ,maybe just 50-51 merc with narrow belts. Had that setup on a T RPU many moons ago.

Late Merc pumps also have raised mounting ears...at least the pair I have do.

It's almost as bad as trying to sort out SBF front engine dress!

Ok 51 ford vicky- ordererd new pumps from speedway p*** is sticking out an 1/8 of an inch too far. Any ideas? box says 49-53 3/8's - did I get the wrong pumps? is 3/8 belt is for car correct?- and I don't have an original to compare it too.

All Fomoco had the wide belts for '49, after that truck only. I've never carefull compared Merc and Truck pumps, but it looks to me that they raised the ears about 2" and then added a 2" spacer between leg and car in '49-51's making it effectively the same!
