This is my first time at this event, so unsure of exact loacation, I know I will be in the swap meet area in a common tent with other vendors....look for the HAMB banner and the Moonlight Movies banner is all I can suggest. Do they have both indoor and outdoor vendors and setups Bob? Quick questions: 1.)What's the name of the movie where the kid and his buds build the roadster and he constantly ends up in front of the judge,then he ***ists the cops in chasing down a crook? 2.)The movie with the row of roadsters roaring down a country road and biker cop rides straight at them and they divide and ride right past him? I swear the one roadster has six twos on his intake? Name and year this would've been filmed if you know? A bunch of us were talking about this over the weekend and I knew you'd know! Thanks!
Swap Meet spaces are actually located on Kanawha Boulevard (4-lane paved street adjacent to the beautiful Kanawha River ). We have 4 large lighted tents whose 10' x 20' spaces are considered "inside spaces" and the remainder of the 10' x 20' spaces are "outside spaces". The entire Swap Meet area is well lit, has concessions and toilet facilities nearby. There is a venue at the event called "Shops At Doo Wop", which is held in the banquet room at the host hotel. It is similar to the "women's world" type areas at other major shows. The items for sale include jewelry, arts & crafts, pottery, cosmetics, etc. The primary purpose is to provide somewhere for the ladies to shop while the guys are on the Boulevard checking out the Swap Meet or the car show. There is no charge for spectator admission to the event. Car registration is $25 for the 4-day event, and includes a t-shirt, goodie bag, dash plaque and admission for two to the Thursday night hospitality BBQ dinner. Well Ranunculus, the movie you speak of is called "Hot Rod 1950" (not to be confused with Hot Rod 1979, which has the willys) Hot Rod 1950 was filmed in 1950....black and white, and actually has a plot and competent young actors. The plot goes like this (copied from IMDB).... David Langham, the youngest son of a hot-rod hating father, Judge Langham, buys an old jalopy but, out of respect for his father, doesn't convert it. He changes his mind when Jack Blodgett, the local speed demon, impresses David's girl, Janie Pitts, and David makes his car the fastest in town. Jack steals David's hot rod, and flees the scene of an accident he causes. The car is traced back to David, but the truth comes out in court, although David's father is still unhappy about the car... until David and his friend, Swifty Johnson, use it to apprehend some escaping robbers. The Judge decides to back a movement for building a hot-rod race track for the town Pretty neat flick, period perfect, and one of the earliest "hot rod based" traditional films I stock.
SHOW UPDATE: Spent the day running 7,000 feet of speaker cable for the show which officially starts Wednesday night at 5;00pm with a Cruise-In at Mardi Gras Resort & Casino. The events on the Boulevard start Thursday morning at 8:00am when the registration tents for the Swap Meet and car show open. There are already 9 restored vintage sternwheeler boats, plus 10 large houseboats docked at Haddad Riverfront Park (in the center of the show venue). In prior years the boats didn't show up until the day before the car show starts, so we may have a really big crowd this year! Charleston, WV is probably one of a few cities that shut down the main 4-lane thoroughfare through town for 4 days for a car show! Got confirmation yesterday that the Hundley & Boggs 1967 World Finals Champion top-fuel dragster will be at this years show! The car runs a 392 blown hemi and was originally based out of Charleston and sponsored by Jim Minnick Racing Ent. of Nitro, WV. Current owner, Marty Harrison of NC, plans to do a "cackle fest" with the car each day on the Boulevard. It will be great to see the car back in the Charleston / Nitro, WV area again and see (and smell) it running on Nitro! Shoulld be a great time! Jim
