An Old Friend Comes Home

  1. Cool car....cool story.

So two explorers are in the blowing wind and snow at the north pole and one tells the other how horribly cold it is. The other guy says, "yeah but if it's this cold here, just think how cold it is in Amarillo!"

got the old friend up and running and back on the street for now. new brakes, clutch, waterpump and new exhaust. tires were good to run, no weather cracks at all. cleaned up better than expected. few spider webs on it and lots of chips but over all looks good. the interior is almost perfect. did decide to pull the left rear fender and fix the lousy bodywork and paint. looks like the sanded it with 80x and shot it. plastic was all cracked and falling out in chunks. soooooooo, here's how it looks cleaned up. lots of work to go, but having a ball.

put the same tags on it I ran in 1974. will wait and see if the cops make an issue of it. if you are wondering the gauges are to old big face stewart warners. the original Sun SST is missing but they left the sending unit under the dash. on the hunt for a replacement.

Reminds me of the style of cars built when I was a kid. I wouldn't change a thing, except maybe find some new rubber in the same sizes.

Cowtown posting right above me reminds me of the time when Dad sold a '40 coupe he had. The family went to the "Cowtown Nationals" about 1987, and somebody stepped up and paid the price. I bet that car hasn't survived the last 25 years as well though.

  8. What an awesome story!

I bet your old car buddies are trippin' out!

be neat to just roll up to their house in it w/o them knowing you got it back!

    Bet they would be floored!

Beautiful ride, glad you got it back !
BTW if those tires are more than ten years old, do your grandkids a favor and replace them.

the rear seat is from a 63 or 64 t-bird. close to a perfect fit. only a little mods needed (I think, my memory fades after 30+ years) fronts are from early mustang.

also the tires are on the radar screen to be replaced very soon after I finish redo'ng the fender.

one update, made it's 1st out of town show. went to the cruise above the clouds at Woodland Park and Cripple Creek Co. had a blast. only one small issue with the car, the alternator was not big enough to charge the battery witht he new cooling fan for the radiator. other than that no problems with the car. no need for a/c so that's one of the winter projects and maybe upgrade stock 40 front brakes to disc. lots to do but no hurry to get it done.

did get the rear fender repaired and repainted, lots of parts replaced just to get it safe on the street. been a ball and bringing back a lot of memories.

Great story,I wish I could find my first car,34 5 window.I should have been castrated for losing it in the first place. Not really ,would have missed out on having 3 great kids.

time for some updates. been a long year and half since I decided the 40 needed an upgrade. did a complete frame off and changed almost everything except the drive train. here are a couple of shots of the almost finished project. (are they ever finished?) added discs to the front and just rebuilt all the chassis components. paint and body work took the longest. wife is happy so that is all that matters.

Very nice. Now, be sure and fix that drooping door handle by replacing the little "S" spring
    inside the latch.
