Thats what you get for not having an up to date AV program.

Go to the Symantec site to get any info. You may be able to load a DOS diskette on your PC as was done in the past with some worms.

If that isnt possible take the HD to another PC that has Norton AV with all the latest virus definitions. Hook it up as a slave and run Norton.

You should not need any new hardware. At best, you will run a program that removes it. At worst, you might have to reload your Windows and other software. More than likely, it will be somewhere in between.

What makes you think you have a worm? Do you know for sure which one? You have to know what you have to get rid of it unless you want to format and reload everything.

sarc.com (symantec) they have an online virus/trojan/worm checker and once its done they display instructions on how to remove the infection if its removable, then get a good AV and keep it updated

What he said. But I have to admit sometimes I wonder if the virus software companies are not in on making these virus's. That way we have to keep buying updated virus software. It is a racket I think.

Nortons seems the one that everyone has, but to tell the truth, i'm not all that impressed and **** still gets thru.....I'm running Nortons, Hi-jack This, Spybot, Ad-aware, Spyware Blaster, Trojan Remover and Ewido...Might even have a coupla more on there.......And **** still gets thru sometimes! Some of these are free....Do a search......And sometimes, if you get a real stubborn bug that seems to still be there after running all this ****, you have to put your computer in "safe-mode" and run the programs so they can't keep installing themselves....Also, do yourself, if you're using internet explorer, ****can it and download Mozilla Firefox.....Not as serceptible to bugs

I'm no computer geek, but i've been there many times

I have the free AdAware from Javasoft and also the free Pestpatrol which runs on startup. These find lots of ****.

And since a best defence is a good offence, stay away from music and video downloads and kids internet sites if you have kids. These are the biggest sources of ****. Looked at any ****o sights lately? Better have a good condom on your 'puter as they are supposed to be a sure fire way to pick up something nasty, pun intended.

Your computer is so unpopular that even virus and worm writers don't bother. :D

I have a couple of old Macs in my big old room full of PCs. My wife says I "go both ways."

  15. If you can't get any help at the semantic site or you can't get your computer to run the easiest is to wipe your hard drive and reload it.
IE formate and reload your Operateing system. You loose everything and start over fresh.
I had to do that to mine this month, I got something called Adaware Delete it came via email and self loaded when I opened the email.

    Bummer sorry to hear it.

Well it looks like im f***ed:mad: I tried to reload windows from discs, but the last disc said it was corruped?? Oh well,it's been fun knowing all of you. But until I can afford a new computer,so long(at least from home) BTW ,I had Norton av,adware, spyware startup shields, firewalls etc. I don't really know if it was a worm,or what, but that worm-thing seems to be going around. I can't even get it to safe mode. Sorry for the O.T. but be carefull with your P.C.'s:( Sparky

Did you ever think that there is an end to life of any PC and yours has finally **** the bed? If you are still using diskettes to load WINdoze that must be an antique.

You can find perfect Pentium 3 based PC's at flea markets and yard sales for under $100. These run in the 400-900 MHz range and are fine for most use. I have a P3-450 overclocked at 605 running just fine on XP Pro in the shop. It really flies; the secret is lots of memory, mine has 768MB of PC133 in a PC100 motherboard running the bus at 124 MHz.

If you arent into tweaking then any basic Dell or other store brand will be almost as good as long as you load the memory up. With WIN98SE you can be fine at 512 MB.

Norton has several levels of protection, Im running 2004 and I dont think earlier versions are as good.
I also use Spybot and Spyware Blaster plus Zone Alarm Pro and have had excellent results with the MS freebie spyware program. All run together with no conflicts. I dont hit **** sites but spend a lot of time on Morpheus DL music, movies and some software; any **** is always caught and zapped. AGAIN, you have to always keep current on revisions. I check for updates at least once a week. MS has an automatic feature and they release fixes every Wednesday.

As I suggested earlier you should have run that HD on another machine in Slave Mode and scanned it. By trying to load a corrupted install you may have lost everything. There is a very good possibility that the diskette is bad and not the PC; Ive had many loaded diskettes go bad just from being stored for a few years.

    You have the Zotob worm.

It primarily attacks Windows 2000 PCs.

Symantec and MS both have removal tools.

Good luck, our company was hit pretty hard.

It is that bad you dont need to buy another computer just get another hard drive to replace the corrupted one and load your windows on that. Cheaper than a new computer.

Yes. It's a 3year old dell pentium 4, mega-gig monster. A new hard drive will fix it. There is light at the end of the tunnel.. sparky

Check all of your programs and try to see if you see anything new that you have not loaded. About a week ago I started getting pop ups out the **** and I started looking around. I had some program (I wish I could think of the name now) that was controling all of this that my spyware programs and stuff was not picking up. I uninstalled it (it took two pr three tries to get it uninstalled) and that stopped all of them. I googled that powered by aurora and all kinds of stuff came up so you may be able to read up on how to get rid of it.

I did tech support for a major PC mfg for years. A lot of times if it's just popups, you can boot into Safe Mode and uninstall anything new, then run System Restore back to a day when it worked.

If that doesn't fix it, it's time to get out your recovery disks.

Sometimes if it's a really persistant virus, and recovery disks don't work, you may need to boot from a bootable floppy that has FDISK on it and blow away the par***ions then run your system recovery CDs.

If that still doesn't work, you can use a botable floppy with DEBUG on it to wipe out sector zero on your hard drive, then FDISK and system recovery.

On the off chance THAT doesn't work, you're one of the unfortunate few that have a BIOS virus (VERY rare; only seen it once) and the motherboard will have to be replaced, unless you can find someone to flash yer BIOS again.

Good luck, and PM me if you have any questions...

    Mike

    Hi Sam,
That's a system recovery. The version of WinXP that comes bundled with the PC usually only gives you the choice of wiping the entire hard drive, but you may want to check with the manufacturer (to see if there are other options they've added to the process) first. Most mfg's have a website with info, and will answer questions online or by email. Of course, you can't use the infected PC, but print out their instructions from another PC. A lot of libraries have them and will let you print out 1 or 2 pages for free or almost free. Hope that helps...
