I'm in need of a 7° ball joint reamer, but from what I've found there around $80.00-$125.00 to buy! Anybody know of a place to rent one or is there a way to slightly open up teo tapered holes in two bungs welded to a 1/4" steel plate? Thanks, -Bob
SLightly? try getting a tapered stone for your die grinder. You can put it in a drill and run it against another stone to change its taper. You can also make your own aper cutting tool. Go buy either a tapered reamer from the hardware store ($10) or a step drill bit.Grind them to the proper taper by placing in a drill and running thembackwards against a grinding stone. The resharpen the cutting edge. The quality of the tool depends entirely on how well you can finish the taper. A lathe with a tool post grinder would be best, but a drill and a file could be made to work (best to least effective methods). I bought the tool for $80 and have never been happier. I have made several parts for TREs and ball joints. and have remachined several parts for other rodders (for a fee)
while i can understand trying to save money , sometimes you have to use the right tool to get to done properly. i'm sure someone around there has a reamer and could do it for you. if you were close to me i'd say bring them over and we would do it , then you could by me lunch
i have heard on here of guys heating the hole cherry red and then drive in the tapered pin of an old tie rod end i've never tried it ,i have a tapered reamer.....but it seams like it could work. i'd try it on some s**** first
there used to be a guy that sold tapered bungs for doing ball joint conversions on falcons or mustangs and they were cheap. here ya go $7! http://streetrodfab.com/index.php?p...n=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53&vmcchk=1&Itemid=53
The circle track racers use them. Try to find one of these guys to borrow from or have them do the job for you.
+1 one on this. I also have the correct reamer, but know of shop that does it the cherry red & old tie rod way and they've never had any issues.
Thanks for the comments, suggestions, etc. I guess I was a little shocked at the price of the reamer, which I only need for a couple of minutes work. My project is hemorraging dollars and I was t hinking I gotta be able to do the job cheaper and direct the funds to another part of the build. I'll try looking around for someone locally that would be willing to ream te holes a bit. Thanks again, -Bob
Bob, a good friend of mine has a brand new one..i'll give him a call tomorrow and see if i can grab it from him so you can use it. Let you know asap. Tony
Tony That would be great - I really apreciate it. I only need to remove a small amount of material - a few thousandths should do it - moves fast on a taper., -Bob
No problem at all. I know exactly how you're feeling, i borrowed a king pin reamer for my 32 due to the same reason. I know he'll let me take it, just need to get out and get it from him. Let you know tomorrow. Tony
