Ok ive been pickin my brain out for a fewe days..n ow ive askin the hambers for their advise! heres my situation... my 350 chev has a pertronics stock 12v coil and basicly stock but once after you drive it for a lil while it doesnt fire on all 8 it feels like it is running on 5 or 6 cylinders...pull over wiggle the wires and after about 5 min it usually fires back up on all 8 cyl. drive it for a nothere half day and same thing over and over...Ive changed my plugs, wires, cap and rotor! My only other option is the cheep coil with the pertronics could be a problem? or could the pertronics be taking a dump on me? Since i had the engine in my 50 it has racked up over 500 miles no problem till now.... Thanks Rich
I was gonna say try new wires but you say you already did that. are you plugs all messed up? if the plugs look good sounds like the only thing you havent tried is the coil. Is your distributor locked down good. could it be turning on you? IS the distributor vacuum advance? if so what vacuum do you have it hooked up to ported or manifold? you want it on manifold vaccuum.
Pertronix usually dont "go" bad, they either work or they dont. I would say your advance is messed up somewhere, have you checked for vacuum leaks on all your lines and connections? When you set timing did you make sure to set it with the advance unplugged??
yeah the timing is set great and the dist. is totally locked down the strange thing it runs great then while your either idleing or driving it starts to missfire! my coil question is do you really need the pertronics special coil or will any coil work? my coil seems to be pretty hot when this bs happens to my car.. i dunno
Again...check EVERYWHERE for vacuum leaks.....I had a pickup do that and a vacuum plug had fallen off the carb.
and that caused it to ramdomally misfire? cus it will sit for 5-10 min with out toutchin it al all and run fine again?? might be cursed!!!!
If you have some cracked line that happens to expand when it gets a bit warm, and contract when it cools, or if it moves,etc...its very possible for it to be random
Exactly what I was going to suggest, heat cycling may be creating a vacuum leak. Do you have Alluminum heads or intake and a cast block?
Just a thought, There isn't an in line resistor or a resistor wire left over from a points distbutor still in the system ? As you probabley know you need a full power to that distrbutor. Carlg
cast block...cast heads and cast intake.... its drivin me fukin crazy...im gonna try to tork down the intke and check for vac*** leaks but the vac. lines are all new... thanksd for the input fellas
if it was the coil it would likely be running good at an idle and horrendous under a load, like you were running with the choke closed for lack of a better description
my personal opinion is 5 minutes isn't very long for things to sit and cool off enough to make much of a difference on engine parts but thats just my opinion and not professional either if you got a spare coil swap it out sounds like you really got nothing to lose on that 3 minute job, you say wiggle the wires, maybe you have a short or a bad connection someplace in the distributor or maybe coil connection, ballast resistor is good as well? no lose wire behind the ignition switch?
Has it just done this since you added the Pertronix? If so, then I agree with Orange Crush, are you still running the stock resistor? The Pertronix will work with a stock coil, but it needs a full 12 volts to operate. My battery was pretty low one time and my car would not start because the unit was getting less then 12volts, so I was getting no spark. I charged the battey and the car started right up. Also, are you running the Pertronix I or II? I've been hearing stories lately about problems with the Pertronix II setup. I would check out the charging system as well. Good luck!
