my 48 olds 98 straight 8 is kind of anemic. i think a 303 or 324 swap is in order along with 12V. i ***ume it will be pretty much a bolt in with minor issues like mounts, being that the '49 body was the same and had a v8. may have to use the related trans if the bellhousing/flywheel/converter is different. has anyone done this to a 48 98? a one year, one body style only question.
I would think that you could pick up a complete package with a hydro and it shuld go in just fine. Trans mounts might be different. Think the early v8's had side mounts on the ****** and a special cross member. Seen them for sale on here and on Ebay. What about a std. shift?? Would look cool with a old time center floor shift like a Lasalle or a Buick. Someone had all the clutch hardware for sale here a while back.
got a line on a '54 engine/trans is why i'm asking. the trans should have a tailshaft mount if i remember right.
It should go in very easy, the rear motor mounts should almost bolt up but the front mount might need to be extended some due to the shorter length of the V8. If you can get the rear mount cross member from the 54 grab it just in case there is a difference.
'54 might be 12 volt. Might be a good time to change up from 6, then maybe not?! Just a thought. 6 volt starter from a earlier Olds v8 won't work unless you change to the small flywheel I beleive. I would check that 54 radiator out also and if in usable shape grab it for a spare to. Call Tony at Ross Racing. He has all the Olds answers. Works with them every day.
The V8 is shorter than the I8. You won't want to shift the engine weight forward so the fan shroud will need to be extended rearward like in the 49-50 A-body cars. I doubt your ****** I8 will bolt up to a V8. The I6 I have is very similar to the I8's and I understand the I6 ******'s don't work with V8's. (Clarifications on this point welcomed.)
