looks like i've got the vacuum running to some improper places on my carb, as per my linked post a few back. Going to swap them around a bit and change the plugs and see what i get.

in the mean time my buddys got this rad truck for sale ;)

    Made it home!
Got to the house this morning with amy handy support car driver steven and a random bag of tools and bits.

We pulled the vacuum hoses from the distributor and the transmission off the carb and swapped them to the port on the manifold, and then spent the next hour at a crappy parts store trying to find new caps and some little stuff that was needed that i of course had at home im a pile of extra stuff 55 miles away. so it goes, oh well we made due and it worked!

pulled the plugs and they were filthy and oily, put new ones in and fired it up, running waaay better.

it felt like just after easing into the throttle it wanted to die, i tried just stomping threw it to no avail so we pulled over a half block into our test run and i throttled it by hand for a while, about 2 blocks later i felt it shift into second and the carb would let me put the gas down with out any issue other then feeling all that crisp, hard to describe i guess, but it worked! we drove a few blocks and then i headed for some hills.

I had a noise i feared was a cracked flexplate that was only around when i got going up a steep hill and hit the throttle, turns out it must have been some ugly detonation because its gone now :) drove about a mile or so around town and the warmer it got the better it acted.

we got back to the house, checked fluids, threw tools in the car and hit the road!

It felt a little soon but i had 40 ish miles of highway and 15 of in town/interstate to go and i didnt want to add in deer on the road at sun set so we went for it.

seems to run just fine, i kept sticking my head out the window to hear the pipes rumble :) doesnt seem to smoke or anything other then like in the video at idle if you stomp it you can get a little puff.

all in all no issues, even with no front shocks on it it road totaly fine and steered easily with one hand.

the only thing ive got to sort out now other then some little noises and what not to make it a more solid driver is messing with the carb.

in short the fuel delivery felt "dirty" and not realy smooth, the throttle pedal feels a little wonky but i think its the firewall flexing were its bolted together so i need to mess with that a bit also. I did about 52 ish mph the whole way with the pedal almost entirely floored, which looking at the linkage should be about a 1/8 inch of pull away from totally open on the carb side. It felt like the secondaries never realy opened?

I want to say that they are vacuum run on the quadra jets so maybe ive got a leak at the base of the carb or else were so its not letting it open all the way up? listening to the motor its not like it was screaming and i wasnt going fast it sounded like about the rpm id expect at the speed I was running it just wouldn't give me enough gas to go any faster?

I think im going to swap to a 500cfm edelbrock in the future as i need that kickdown hooked up and the current carb has the mounting point cut off, yeah real cute, but i can't really afford to swap it until after the wedding and my wallets recovery of the wedding so for now im trying to trouble shoot the quad thats on it for now.

any thoughts other then i ramble?

    thanks :)

Yeah other than the secondary's feeling like they won't open the only hiccup was after driving for an hour or so I pulled off the highway to a stop light and it just shut off. Cranked over and turned back on easy peasy then did it again about a mile or two later at a stop sign. I'm sure it'll just take more tuning

After a go threw on the carb checking the easy stuff that carb needs completely rebuilt. With the wedding looming I'm going to try to put off some things on the car and use the funds for a new 500 edelbrock carb. then I'm hopefully a little tuning from in running in the range it should be.

Kinda fun having the car so close now, I keep going out to make sure it's really there! I think the more I drive it the more it tells me what it wants to be when it grows up haha.

So got the carb on tonight with the only trouble being an indestructible choke cable sheath.
I'm going to need a new throttle cable end and a new return spring bracket but I fired it up anyways and it sound NOTHING like it did before, I'm super thrilled.

Hopefully I can find what I need in town tomorrow and be driving tomorrow night to see what it feels like :)

Went for a drive tonight! Got the carb cable and new ends installed, a new throttle return spring bracket and springs and fired it up. I played with the idle air/fuel screws and got it idling and driving just fine. Could probably tweak it more but it's pretty close to what I'd deem ideal.

Jumped in and did maybe a mile or two of random residential driving getting lost in culdisacks and it drives and behaves much much better. Even the old manual steering felt easier to control with the engine running smooth and strong.

Only down side is the better power made the air in the line more noticeable haha. With running out of the way I can put more attention to the brakes and shocks etc and get it all tuned and etc.

    Feelin good :)

some one made note a long while back of how Sarah wasn't in the photos much anymore after the beginning, let me assure you she has put in an awefull lot of back to back 12 hour days right next to me on the car.

So with that in mind i thought id post this 14 month update photo, in a month or so when its all cleaned up and a little more put together i thought id post the video of when we first walked around the car and a video of it now. but until then...

Thanks :) can you believe it sat that high WITH the flathead 8 still in it! From what I read over the first 1000 miles my front spring should settle another inch-ish looking forward to a little more nose down stance.

Tomorrow morning I'll put on my warm clothes and finally jack the car up and tighten the residual valves better, there not wanting to seal 100% which obviously makes bleeding them a futile mission. Hopefully I can manage all that tomorrow and get my insurance papers stuck in the car somewhere the wind won't take them.

Then I can work on getting the proportioning valve just right, install the gauges, make some quick and dirty seat covers, cover the floor with a rug or something, pai t the wheels and add caps. Wash and wax and there we are in time for wedding bells :)

Yeah just realized that it's 2 weeks left, yikes! Got a lot to get done haha.

I need a pair of the short 2.39 ish inch dog bones used to connect the 42-8 front sway bar to axle a.s.a.p. to attach the stock lever type shocks to the axle. I'm wanting to use the sway bar dog bones instead of the stock ones because they are 2.5 ish inches shorter the. Stock and I've dropped the car at least 3 inches.

So with a shorter connecting link I shouldn't be bottoming out my shocks so quick like I would with stock links.

MAC's has them but will take 3 weeks to get them to me. That's obviously not going to work. Has anyone else an idea of where I can find some of these and get them quickly?

    Thanks guys.

I'll make a video one of these days explaining what I did to my A and YOU have to try and interpret it to the HAMB masses.

    Mua-ahaha.

Hah, if you go less then the standard million miles an hour I'm sure I could. I have to imagine a big dude like yourself signing all the time has got to end with some stiff fingers. No pun intended haha.

Kind of odd. I'm not having any bottom out trouble with mine and it looks all original, You may be a bit lower up front then mine is. Good idea none the less.

  26. Congrats on the drive buddy! The sedan is looking great. I will check my stash (car not mus) and see if I have any of the links of which you speak.

Gary? I've got shackles an inch longer then stock and a posies reverse eye 3" drop spring that should settle at least another inch so I figured I'd be on the safe side to do it like this. I'll let you all know how it turns out :)

That definitely sounds lower then mine. Another option might be to give the shock arms a little kick upwards. Your idea sounds much easier, and cleaner.
