Incredible welds

Thanks. Yes, 1/8 inch over 5 feet is not much, but it is too much here. It must be able to be disassembled and installed easily. And the way it is it rubs the side of the tube hard.

heat straightening stainless is tricky. the higher than steel coefficient of expansion makes it go WOOOW just because its warm and it take a long time to cool to a uniform temperature. There were 2 or 3 guys at the balance shop that got real good at straightening the rotors good enough to begin balancing. After welding balance weights on it took a while to cool, and then things would have moved aroung again

Thanks Dan, that's a trick looking part. Probably spins at a good RPM if it has to be balanced? This auger I'm talking about turns slow, has about .160 clearance to the tube. It was sent back to the manufacturer today for them to play with. SS, especially 304, is a crazy metal to work with.

I built up the edge on some 22 gauge for a fender lip on my latest sculpture(.035 filler, 1/16" tungsten)...

the day i tried to weld for the 1st time, with a 80a stick machine.

 

Not in the same league a the stuff on here, but I'm proud enough to show this: Justin is a kid who has just started out helping at my shop. Started teaching him to weld and it is important to me that he at least gets a handle on MMA before he picks up the MIG
This was after about 30 minutes on heavier stuff with 2.5mm rod, I had to leave and told him to play on some 1.6 or 2mm scrap and get a feel for heat control, traverse speed and how much easier it'll all burn through.
He misunderstood and grabbed some 1mm These were around attempt 12-15.


I've seen guys who've been at it with a MIG for years making much messier welds than this......

 

Kid has talent, and a good teacher.
Learnin to weld with the stick was a blessing. Althou, knowin what i know now i'd get a mig right away

 

Why? Do you think those are bad welds? They unbelievably held for how many years?

 

Tape often holds stuff on for lots of years too


I like to weld for "worst case scenario", not "well....this might not break!"

Repair job I did last week. Prep is as important as the act of welding itself. Nice bright clean metal is required for a good sound weld, regardless of the process used.
