Hello again everyone, I am fixing my car so I can sell it, and I put in a new tank, a new fuel pump, and a new fuel filter, and I charged the battery overnight. I went to start it and it still won't start. How much time does the fuel pump need to get some fuel going thru the system? I did everything the way I took it off. What could be wrong? Thanks Everyone.
Did you troubleshoot it? You getting fuel to the carb? How about the mechanical pump, if there is one? Fuel problems are pretty easy to troubleshoot. Just get a can of gas with a short length of fuel line. Start at the carb and work your way back until it stops working. Replace whatever's wrong.
Try putting a few dropssa fuel in the carb..... Putr the air cleaner back on and le if it tries..........PLEASE KEEP A FIRE BOTTLE NEAR!!!!!
I think my uncle is coming over soon and then we will pour some gas down the carb, it started before a few months ago like that, I am just surprised that with a new fuel pump I am not getting it started? how much play is supposed to be in the timing chain, because while the fuel pump was off I reached in to feel the lobe, and I felt a chain ( I assume timing chain), and there must have been 3/4 of an inch of play in it. How long is it usually before a fuel pump starts pulling gas? Thank You Soooooo Much.
So, I went out and disconnected the fuel line from the carburetor, it was dry, Do I need a full tank for the fuel pump's first time? How much time does the pump need before it starts pumping? Thanks
I dealt with something similar on my 54 Chevy a couple of weeks ago. The car would run on starting fluid, but wouldn't keep running on fuel. I put a CLEAR inline filter so I could see if it was getting any gas. It wasn't. Fortunately, there's very few points of failure between the gas tank and carb. First thing I did was take the gas filler cap off (perhaps it was the wrong cap or the vent was blocked). Nothing. So the I took inlet line off the pump and feel for suction when the car was turned over. It wasn't super strong, but it was there. Then I disconnected the fuel pipe at the tank and blew air through the line. It seemed to be blocked to me. So I squirted in some WD-40 and we ran MIG wire through it while blowing air in the other end. Unfortunately (fortunately for me), my friend was running the MIG wire while I ran the air. He cleared the blockage and then 30 year old fuel line crud covered his favorite work shirt and the wall behind him. We buttoned it all back up and the filter was full after just a couple second of cranking.
You probrobly need to prime the carb to get the engine started & running fast enough for the pump to draw the fuel from the tank. If your Ford is still 6 volt I can almost bet it is'nt cranking over fast enough for the pump to pick up the fuel. So just dump a half a spray paint cap of fuel down the carb & she should fire right off. I'm also assumeing you have no issues with your ignition system. Also, a 12 volt conversion will do wonders as far as how quickly the car will start too. Billy
Do you have a bad fuel line? A rubber hose with cracks or a steel line with a rust hole will prevent a new mechanical fuel pump from pulling gas to the motor, the pump can only suck air through the cracks or holes. You will probably need at least 2-5 gal of gas in the tank. It could take as long as 5 minutes to pump the fuel to the carb the first go around, esspecially if its a long ways from the tank to the pump. The hoses are hooked to the pump on in the correct location, right? If you put your finger over the pump inlet and cranked over the motor, you should be able to feel the pump sucking on your finger. The inlet is the line that goes to the fuel tank. I have run into a few new fuel pumps that I had to add just a touch of fuel to to get them to pump the first time. Sounds like a lot of slop in that timimg chain to me, are you sure the cam is turning? If the cam don't turn, the pump can't pump. Does the pump run directly on the cam, or is there suppose to be a push rod to activate the pump? If there is a push rod, its in there, and the fuel pump is riding against it, not along side of it, right? Gene
Ohhh Ok, Ill try all of these, Ill take the fuel line and blow it out and clean it, anything else I can use, I don't have a welder, should I get some thin rod from Home Depot? I will pour some gas down, Its a 12v system. I am positive the cam is turning, cause I had to crank it a few times to get the fuel pump in. The metal line has some rust but no holes, I will put my finger on it to feel, Thakns ALL A TON I wanna be able to drive it a little before selling it. Thanks
GUESS WHAT ITS FIXED and sounds AMAZING, Thanks To EVERYONE here on the HAMB you helped me, you shoulda seen what blew out of the fuel line from pump to carb, jeez it was like a rust ball, pretty gross. THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE
So did you have to use a wire or did you just blow it out with the compressor? I think my caddy might be doing the same thing now.
good to see you got it running...you might want to drop the tank and see what other crap lies within....or you might end right back up where you were...don't ask me how I know this
