    Hey,
I am running a 1965 327 in my 55 chevy. My first priority was getting my ride on the road a few years back and not having a ton of money I used parts that I had. Now I would like to look a detailing my engine bay so that it was a little more period correct. I have sourced everything such as the proper single pulley for the crank, the shorter water pump etc.
Now what I am looking for is a lower alternator bracket that will connect the alternator to the header flange because the 300 horse camel hump heads I will be running do not have any accessory holes on the front of them. Does anyone know where I can find one of these brackets.
    Thanks
    J

Most of the header manufacturers sell them. I'm sure you can get one from Jegs, Summit, Speedway, etc.

Hey Larry thanks for chiming in here I think I might have found them but I really don't know what they look like man. Does anyone have a pic of this bracket installed in an actual car so that I can visualize this better?
    Thanks

Why not mount it low I see your not running power stearing. Allen Crove makes a bracket to mount it real low on the drivers side.

tHAT Upper bracket there is 70'/80's style requiring the long water pump. Short water pumps have that long upper bracket using an after market 2-piece header mount.

Im wrong, that is the long water pump you got. Get another lower alt. bracket & cut the lower of the 2-boltholes on the water pump side & use one of the water pump mounting bolts which is blocked by the regular un-cut lower alt bracket on the water pump.

That Allen Crove stuff is expensive! Besides I already have the upper bracket.

It is the 2 piece header mount that I am looking for. Like I said I have the shorter water pump too.

Got a link man? Is yours two pieces? Are they the same pieces that I linked to this thread from Summit?

For your consideration. Not what your looking for, but this works with what you currently have. I personally like this set up. But that just me.

I weld bungs on the old heads. A piece of threaded rod in a head with the holes and a bung piece on the end, slide the old head up so it touches. Line them up with the edge of the welding table and grow 'er together! Done it many times, never had one screw up yet.

Yep, that's them. I worked for a shop that did a lot of hot rod work in the early 70's and installed a ton of headers with this basic setup. Actually the stuff we used back then was more like the Hedman 20010 and 20040 (in Summit). These are for the short water pump. Most engines that had the long pump on them usually had the later heads with bolt holes and used the stock style mounts. On the occasion we had an engine with a long pump with early heads, we used the stock mount off the pump and fabricated another brace for the thru bolt behind the alternator.

Did anyone use a low mounted alternator in the 60s-80s? I never saw one.

I bought mine [chrome] from the local speed shop that eventually closed down...uses the header/exhaust manifold bolts. It's Mister Gasket brand.

It's good to see your helping him find a mount. Some people just like to complain and not help.

    Speedway has lower chrome mounts
I bought to ones you mentioned that go on a header for a few bucks at a swap meet. Those things are around. Look for older sbc - tri fives and older trucks for the mounts.

If you want it period correct, go to swap meets (or friends' parts stashes), and find old versions of those two parts you listed on Summit's web page.

That's how it was usually done.

Ditch the headers and go back to the 65 chevy ramhorns with the cast alternator mount. The ramhorns are good to 350HP should work with your 300HP heads, (and look cooler too).

Wow boys thanks for the responses! This is why the HAMB works!

Thanks Larry for chimming in again. I did run the 20010 number and 20040 numbers and they look to be the same thing. If I end up buying a set that are chrome I mostlikely will just samd blast them before painting them.

This looks like a great set up but for now I have been running front motor mounts on the 327 set-up so it really won't work but thanks for the idea man.

Problem with this Jim is that there are a hell of a lot less parts roaming around up here in Canada lololollol. So I am probably going to have to go with something new and if it comes chrome mostlikely I will blast it!

In your eyes man they might look cooler but with my wallet how it is I would need to dig deeper then it would allow to take the engime bay in that direction.

Thanks again for everyones help on this one. I went back and changed the thread ***le so that if anyone in the future does a search hopefully what we talked about here might help them out!

On my 283 I used a chrome arm and the manifold bracket (beacause of the power steering)

I tried something like this on my '57, but the front crossmember won't allow it.

I dont have it on hand, but once you have yours all setup just run a string around your pulleys and head over to your local autoparts store, they should have a bunch of sizes available for you

I have one on my truck that's similar to the ones mentioned before from Summit and have been using it with a short water pump. Need to note the stock '55 front mounts use those 2 holes that the other low style mounts shown use - the engine doesn't use side mounts. I use those holes for engine mounting as well. I'll be switching to the lower mount but I also will be going to a long water pump to get the fan closer to the radiator. This allows the alternator to be mounted ahead of the block and mount and should tuck in nicely. Then the alternator mount and engine mount will share the same hardware.
