First, congratulations! Second, this thread peaked my interest for a couple reasons. I've got two little ones and I've got a '54 Chevy wagon. I've gone back and forth on selling the wagon many times, but then I'd need to find a family friendly replacement. My wife loves old trucks, but then we'd be in the same boat as you are right now. As it is, my '36 Ford coupe build will present this same problem when it's done. If you find you are seriously looking for a '54 Chevy wagon, get in touch with me. Maybe we can work something out. Whatever you decide, I've found it's really cool having an old car/truck just to get the kids interested in this stuff.

  2. far as i know (which is very little...) beans got it right. no back seat no way to get you in trouble.

Yea again guys, thanks for the input. So much to consider! And many thanks for the kind words. Honestly, I'm just so excited to take my kid and wife around in whatevr old car I own. I have my daily driver that's a corolla wagon and my wife has a subaru forester, I guess were into wagons. But I've used my truck for when we did remodeling our house, we took stuff home, we hauled stuff to the dumpster, helped people move, etc.. so its been nothing but a joy to own. Now that I know that its legal to have a seat in the front, it could make my decision a lot easier. When I bought the truck I just always pictured owning it forever. Hah, well see how that goes. My dream is to have a huge garage and multiple cars but that's really not realistic...for now. I'm a mechanic and its been getting slower and slower...looking for a way out. Until then, I must stick to 1 hotrod. I just love em all, so I want all of them! I guess ill have to see how things play out in the next couple of months. Very exciting time, I'm 27 years old and I hope to instill the love of old cars in my kids (hopefully) and have old cars around my kids aslong as I breath. Hope the Lord keeps me around long enough!

Keep the truck. Get a part time job til the wife gets bigger and cant move on her own. (The truck will come in handy). Use the bucks to buy a wagon or something bigger. Never sell anything.
When we were kids mom would have about 8-10 kids in a 64 chevy. We are still alive at least mostly.
    Congrats on the baby!!!

Yeah, I know exactly how you feel. I had my 56 Pontiac just where I wanted it when we had enough of living in apartment buildings.****roaches and drunk/fighting neighbors had us looking for a house and when we found one, we needed closing costs. The 56 went up for sale and when it went down our street, I almost cried. Man! I had a ton of work in that car.
But it all turned out for the best as I've built a lot of hotrods in my little one-car garage. It's much better than building cars out in the apartment parking lot and local college shop.
Besides, 54 chevy wagons are cool and remember, those kids grow fast! You'll be suffering from "empty nest" syndrome before ya know it and you can do another 50 chevy pickup.

Big difference between our generations and anyone born in the last thirty years! My parents hauled my brother and I either in the "T" buckets in the summer, (his green 'flake, hers purple 'flake) multiple rumble seats, or sitting on the deck of our Latham blown XKE. I didn't wear a seat belt until the early ninties when it became a law to do so in late model cars. Hate to admit it, but the Plymouth still doesn't have them. It will this rebuild though.
Love the mental image of the baby daughter in full papoose gear strapped to dad on the bike... I would consider that a major character building thing, some of my neighbors around here would probably faint.

Congrats on your news! You seem to be totally ****oned up with your priorities in order and are obviously a great family man! Use your gut...you have obviously succeeded this far. My Dad, on the other hand, kept his 50 Ford PU and threw us in the bed....how times have changed! Congrats!

Congratulations on the new baby coming. If it were me I'd keep the truck till your other ride was sitting in the driveway. You know you can squeeze 2 adults and a c****at in the truck. I put three kids in the back of my A sedan 10,7 and 4. People are pretty impressed when we just keep unloading.

Haha that's funny. I think his wagon might be in quite better condition than mine. His wagon is lovely.

Yea I can def squeeze 3 in my truck. I do have a rather tall shifter, and the car seat might be kinda in the way buuuut everything can be modified. I had put my truck on craigslist earlier today and my wife called me impatient for doing it. She's right with u guys telling me to hold off until the right opportunity comes around. Good advice. Good thing I'm not obligated to sell once I post it. Well see what happens.

I also find it very hard to sell a vehicle. It doesnt matter what it is or what year. I dont buy a vehicle unless it makes my heart beat faster.

Kinda have thought about it, but they're either too expensive or too much of a rust bucket. And quite frankly my truck roof is about 1 inch from hitting the bottom of my garage door. Hah a suburban would take the door right off! 54 chevy wagon kind of struck a chord the first time I saw one at a show, I stopped by like 10 time that day to just dream about owning it. Nothing fancy, nice patina, lowered, sbc, radir wheels. Just perfect!

    my son in law and daughter have 4 kids, I just helped them do up a 66 skylark 2drhdtp bench seat car with 6 seatbelts, a couple of months ago she told me she wasn't going to let an old car determine her life so she wanted a longroof. Long story short they wanted to look at a 59 ford wagon to do up next so we checked it out and they bought it, put it on the car trailer we brought it home and they informed us #5 is on the way. Any body have a third row seat for a 59 Ford :}

Congrats on the new addition coming to your family.
Don't sell your truck. Get some good seat belts and a good car seat and your son/daughter will be able to be right beside you in your truck. There is no airbag so it is not illegal to have a child in front. I got my Acadian when my son was about 7 and he always road in the front seat with me.

Try making a simple phonecall to your local highway patrol if it makes you feel any better. That's what I did. Found out front seat of my pickup was just fine. My boy goes everywhere with me now. Makin' those memories. ImageUploadedByTJJ1349332366.962175.jpg

That's awesome man. Looking forward to doing the same thing. I checked out the dmv site concerning babyseats and it says IF you have a back seat then the seat should go in the back, but if you don't have a back seat then front is ok, but not prefered. Ok so what's the best seatbelt to get? I guess a lap belt in the middle wouold be ok. Maybe weld some anchors behind the bench on the cab too? This is my first time doing this baby thing so I can honestly say I'm clueless!

...keep the truck if you like it that much; just throw the kids in the back!
(I know, that wont work)...start lookin for a cheap wagon now, build it and keep your truck too, you can do it. ...nice truck.

We have all sold some car or project to take care of some family emergency, that is just what you do and never look back. But this doesn't sound like a true "emergency" just that you are thinking ahead and that it might be better to do this for the extra room.

In that case I would not sell the truck. Like the guys said, a pickup always comes in handy and you love this one. Lots of families have a later model pickup as their only car, so why would this be any different.

Take it from someone who has sold a lot of cars over the years, you will kick your own **** someday if you part with your friend.

I have to agree with keeping the truck. You love it, it sounds dependable and you know the vehicle. If it has a bench seat, put the belts in and the three of you will be set. You can keep enjoying and utilizing your truck and the c****at plus your wife and you will fit. You won't need to pain over selling it just yet and drumming up a car that may or may not be really what you want.

I've had to sell just about every car or truck or motorcycle that I've had and I usually hate having to do it but that's life and my kids come first! It just doesn't sound like you really need to sell just yet! I'm a single father of a 5 and 7 year old and we all ride in my '27 roadster (has belts) and my '52 F6 dump truck just fine for now!

I think, instead of getting rid of my truck maybe I should get one of these and customize it! Now that's a cool toy!

You don't have to do anything right yet. Wait till after the baby is born and is up to a year old. He or she won't be up for rod runs for quite a while.

I'm sure you will think of a good solution.

O and congratulations on the little gift from heaven.

Nope...it's not wrong to be attached. I sold my '66 F-100 to pay off a house from a employment move. Regretted it for years...so did my wife. In fact she loved the truck as much or more than I did. If you can keep it...keep it. Like everyone else says, find a cheap wagon, they're out there. Ultimately, though, it's your decision...of course.

yea, still have the truck. but got me eye peeled for something that i can love as much as i love my truck. honestly, the only thing that i really really want is a 54 chevy wagon. but i def dont want sellers remorse. i talk to the guy that sold me my truck once in a while and he always tells me that he regrets selling it. haha
