I have a 53 chevy w/ original 235. When the car is running, i get a good amount of smoke from the crankcase breather and a little from the oil cap/breather on the valve cover. I dont get any noticeable smoke from the exhaust. Is this normal? Is there anything i could do to fix it? Just looking for advice/ info...thanks in advance... Tony
Sounds like there is a lot of pressure in the crankcase, but I dont know for sure, also what does your oil look like? Maybe your oil is getting hot in the block and burning. I'm not sure but I hope this helps.
Ive been told that the oil vapor that comes out the oil cap is caused by bad rings. As for the road draft tube, it is supossed to smoke a little. That is what it does, breathes out the crank case.
you could put a PCV valve on it, and get rid of the smoke, but what fun would that be? old engines are supposed to make some blowby....
It has to breathe - just so you know it's alive! Do a compression test to put your mind at ease. If they're all near the same. Drive it. If they're not? Drive it anyway...
My 216 Chevy is a rebuilt motor ( done back in the 80's before the car was parked in a storage container) and runs great but the road draft tube does smoke too, I always figured these old engines were coal fired and so were supposed to smoke!! Serioulsy might just be worn rings....
thanks for all the replies guys, i think im just gonna let it be for now, no need to put a pcv valve in it...thanx again tony
